GILL, William (Service number 49975)
Biographical Notes
William Gill stated that he had been in New Zealand for five years when he enlisted on 31 January 1917 at Timaru. He had been called up in 1916. William was residing at "Ettrick Bank", High Street, Timaru, and was employed as a clerk for Priest & Holgate. He was the son of Joseph and Jane Gill, both deceased. It appears that he may have been the William Gill (or Gills) born in 1876 at Prudhoe, Northumberland. This William was at home with his family at Prudhoe, in 1911 there being only William, a clerk, and his widowed father. His mother probably died in early 1911, aged 71 years; and his father Joseph, a coal miner, on 1 October 1911 at West Wylam, aged 72 years
