Francis / Joan Lidbury
« on: Wednesday 25 February 26 18:53 GMT (UK) »
Hi. I really need some help with my brick wall please. My 5x g.grandfather John Lidbury was baptised in 1708 in Berkley, Somerset the son of Francis and Joan Lidbury. The surname was rare in the village , however was very common indeed a few miles away in Warminster. I have a comprehensive tree of the Lidburys of Warminster, and it is certain that Francis was bp in 1673 the son of Austin. He had 7 children bp. in Warminster up until 1705 but the mother's name does not appear in any of the bp registers. John is then baptised in 1708 in nearby Berkley where Joan is listed as the mother. Now, my problem is that many researchers across several major FH websites are listing Francis as having married a Joan in 1694 and that she was the mother of his children. None of these researchers list a source. Francis and Joan were indeed buried at Berkley, where they seem to have moved between 1705 and 1708 , as there was no sign of them before John's baptism. I have two questions really. Did somebody just see Francis and Joan at Berkley and assume that it was the same Francis who was fathering children in Warminster with no named wife, and over the years other researchers have just gone with this theory and added it to their trees. Or secondly, is there any other resource that I could find that will give me the marriage of Francis Lidbury to a Joan c 1694 if it did , indeed, take place. I have tried everything I can think of. Thankyou for your time.

Somerset, England, Church of England Baptisms, Marriages, and Burials, 1531-1812

Not helpful but i see a burial in 1711 Joan wife of Francis Lidbury/Lydbury- could have been June 4th 1711 Berkley.

Burial - July 22 or 1722 ?  Francis Lydbury - Berkley.

Thankyou Sandra. Yes, those are the burials I mentioned in my post, however it is their marriage I am desperately seeking. Everything points to Warminster but try as I might, I cannot find it.

Thankyou. There were several Francis Lidburys in Warminster at this time, and this is not mine. My Francis died and buried at Berkley in 1722.
