U.K. Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers Service Records WW2
« on: Wednesday 25 February 26 18:26 GMT (UK) »
I have just received a hint on Ancestry for my mother!

This was a Service Record for my father in WW2 - UK Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers.
It was a 9 page record of my father's service (My Mum was included on it as his wife).

I didn't know ANY service records for WW2 were available to view yet, so I just thought I would mention this. It is a very detailed document.

(It didn't give me this hint against my father's name, as he had omitted his middle name when he enlisted - but my Mum's name, as his wife, - was correct).
Places of interest;
Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.

It's available to view on Ancestry! Not Fold 3.

With thinking that no WW2 records were available yet, it came as a complete shock to me (although other clever people may already know that some records are available).

Around 54,000 REME records were among the first WW2 service records to be completely catalogued by TNA and are found in WO420. In part this was beacuse the REME was only formed in 1943 and so involved fewer individuals than the other Regiments and corps where the records stretched back to 1921. Also done are the UK smaller Corps (RMP, RAPC, Intelligence Corps etc) whose records were originally held by the Bournemouth Combined Manning and Records Office. These are in WO421 with 94,000 records catalogued.
Work is in progress on the main bulk of records for the Infantry which can be found or will shortly be available in W422 and WO 423.
The work by Ancestry to digitise all these records is trailling behind somewhat as there is more work involved, and as Ross says Ancestry are only digitising the non-sensitive information and concentrating on attestations and the main part of the service record  known as the Army Form B 103 Service and Casualty Form. TNA will generally hold additional undigitised records for most soldiers.

Thank you both, for reading my message and replying and providing your additional information - and for the informative link by rafcommands.

Certainly my father's record was very detailed about his service - which appeared to start in 1941 - end in 1946, then included his service in the Territorial Army from 1946 to 1956.
