Where was John Bevan in 1871?
« on: Wednesday 25 February 26 09:54 GMT (UK) »
Please could some member help me with this family.
Morgan Bevan 1828-1894 born in Horton Glamorganshire, married his first wife Ann Beynon 1835-1872 in 1858 Port Eynon.
They had 7 children
Charles Wesley 1859-1900
George Mansel 1860-1884
Ada Mary 1864-1939
Frederick Morgan 1866-1901
Arthur b 1867
James 1870-1873
Sydney 1871-1935
Morgan married his second wife Emma Branston in 1873 in Swansea
They went on to have 2 children
Theophilus Hamilton 1875-1943
Frank Cecil 1877-1950

On the 1881 census we have John William Bevan b 1862, on searching the GRO site I have found John William mother's maiden name Beynon. I would like to know were was John in 1871? the rest of the family are together and of course on the 1881 census Emma is named as the mother which I expected.
Any help or advice would be grateful

Possibly a clerical error when copying from the individual sheets onto a master list.

Thank you Trish, looks very much like John William, as yet I have not researched the father's family eg siblings as its the Beynon family that I am connected to.

I think this is Jane in 1861;
David Bevan 72 Head Widr Stonemason
Samuel Naile 45 Son-in-law Collier
Jane Naile   41 Wife
David Naile 11 Son
Margrat Naile 2 Daughter

1841 Census
Llangyfelach**
David Bovan 50 Mason
Margret Bovan 50
Margrat Bovan 15
David Bovan 10

Marriage 17 Nov 1809 St David and St Cyfelach, Llangyfelach
David BEVAN to Margaret THOMAS

Cant see bapts for Morgan and Jane to establish their Father was David though

Emma is not named as John's mother. She is recorded as Morgan's wife which is correct. People are named on the census record as to how they relate to the head of household (in this case Morgan). All the children listed below Morgan and Emma are recorded as son or daughter (of Morgan) not whether they are also son or daughter of Morgan's present wife.

So Morgan's wife and his mother were Beynons. Were they related?

Possibly, but Beynon & Bevan are not uncommon names in the area.

Death notice confirms Samuel was the father of Morgan Bevan

Possible baptism for Mary
Rhossili 20 June 1832 Mary dau of David, farmer, & Jane Beynon of Sluxton

1851 census

Burial Rhossili 15 Sept 1856
Jane Beynon 63 Gelli-groes, parish of Llanrhidian

I wonder if the David Bevan on the 1871 census should be David Beynon, age is wrong, but he was a widower by that time.
