Farrow family - Whepstead
« on: Sunday 22 February 26 17:45 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I'm looking for help tracing an ancestor - Elizabeth Farrow.

She married William Parker in 1814 in Chevington

On the 1851 -1871 census she gives her birth place as Whepstead - but to date I cannot find a record of her.

Given her marriage in 1814 - and ages given on census records possible baptism 1792-1793

I've checked Chevington as well - but the two records I found didn't match her potential birth (unless for one record she was baptised as ? 8-9 year old)

All help greatly appreciated

There is an Elizabeth daughter of John and Ann FARROW born November and baptised privately on 3 December 1791 in the register of Great Whelnetham, (along with twin brother Jacob). Great Whelnetham is only some 7km (4 miles) from Whepstead.  :-\

The Elizabeth daughter of John and Susan FARROW (nee ABBOT) who was received into the church at Chevington on Oct 27 1809, was born 29 Sept 1801 and privately baptised 27 Oct 1801. Is this the late baptism you meant? So whilst a late baptism, probably born a little late for your Elizabeth?

Where when did William/Elizabeth abpt their children.
Childrens names may be a clue to their parents.

Sorry wasnt that bapt to Joseph/Mary not Ann?

3 Dec 1791, St Thomas a Becket, Great Welnetham
ELIZABETH Daug of JOSEPH/MARY Farrow, Mary nee ROOK
Siblings;
JACOB 3 Dec 1791
HANNAH 11 Mar 1792
MIRA 8 Mar 1795 buried 3 May

It is possible Elizabeth 1791 married 12 Nov 1810 same Church to Richard NORRIS

The Register that I am looking at definitely says parents are John and Ann. Can't attach an image here, will post  it on a new thread.  ;D

Actually, looking further down the page of the Register I see a baptism for Hannah, dau of Joseph and Mary FARROW (nee ROOKS) born 8 March 1792 and privately baptised 11 March 1792.

Presumably this is where the mix up comes from?

It's good of you both to take an interest in this woman.

However, rather than hunting for potential baptisms in neighbouring parishes, I think the real question here is, why is there no record of her baptism in Whepstead when all the census evidence indicates that she had been born there.

The only Farrow couple having children in Whepstead in the 1790s were actually my 5th gg-grandparents, George Farrow and Mary born Farrow, who had married in 1789. There was Mary baptised in 1791, George in 1796 and John in 1799. Three further children were baptised in 1802, 1806 and 1809.

Elizabeth would fit comfortably between Mary and George.

Looking at the original baptism registers, it is clear that the population of Whepstead was small.

1791   16 baptisms
1792   15
1793   12
1794   12 baptisms - none recorded in the months of Sep., Oct. & Nov.
1795   18
1796   13
1797   26
1798   20
1799   33 baptisms - none recorded in the months of Jul., Aug. & Sep.

The periods during which there were no baptisms recorded fall in the middle of otherwise clearly legible pages in the registers.

Is it possible, or indeed likely, that the absence of a record of Elizabeth's baptism is simply the result of an oversight on the part of the local vicar?
