Marriage Certificate
« on: Saturday 21 February 26 14:34 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
Just wondering if anyone could help.
I'm looking at the marriage certificate of Charles Mcginty and Phoebe Langford or Andrews.
It says they married on the 21st of July 1911 but it wasn't registered until 11th December 1911.
In the column where the signatures of the minister and witnesses go it states "Extract Sentence of Conviction dated 6th or 8th December 1911 in the Sheriff Court of Lanarkshire at Hamilton"
Just wondering if anyone has any idea what this means.
Thanks

Its possible that the initial marriage was what is commonly referred to as an irregular marriage (marriage outside the church).

Scots Law recognised various forms of such non church marriages.

However, technically "irregular" marriages were illegal as they were considered a form of concealed marriage and one of the forms of having the marriage accepted and registered was for someone (usually the groom) to be  convicted of the offence which officially recognised that the marriage existed and this allowed the marriage to be recorded by the Registrar. (this avenue was done away with around 1916)

It would appear that Phoebe was living with Charles pre the marriage 21st July 1911. I suspect she and Charles learnt of William's death and burial 27th June 1911 and married soon after.
