Having Trouble Finding Mary Blenkinsopp, Widow, and James Blenkinsopp
« on: Wednesday 18 February 26 21:00 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I am looking for my 3rd great grandmother, Mary Blenkinsopp nee Pigg, on the 1891 census. She was born in North Shields in 1826 to John Pigg and Hannah Hymers. She married George Scott Blenkinsopp on the 10th March 1850 in Monkwearmouth, Durham. He died in Scotland in 1869.

In 1881, she was living at 39 New Brandling Street, Sunderland with her sons:- Thomas Pigg, George Scott, William Pigg and James. On the 1901 census, she was living on her own at 44 Huddleston Street, Sunderland, where she died 4 years later.

I however cannot seem to find her on the 1891 census, despite looking quite hard. Her son, James Blenkinsopp married in 1893 in Sunderland, and I am also unable to find him on the 1891 census as well. I think they may have been living together at that point, but I am not sure.

There is a Mary Blenkinsopp listed at Westoe in 1891, but she is listed as "single", so this can't be her.

Would anybody be able to help me?

Thank you,

JackB

If you are using Ancestry she has been incorrectly indexed as May Kent aged 60 born North Shields together with son James (Kent) aged 24  born Scotland and living in Sunderland. RG 12/4151/58/29.

She is correctly indexed as Mary Blenkinsop on FindMyPast.

Snap :)

I was typing this as you posted.

I think this could be Mary and her son James in 1891,

I found her transcribed as May at FindMyPast,

24 Gladstone Street, Shore, Sunderland, Durham

James       "                 Son       S        24   Boilersmith   Scotland

Hi,

Thanks so much for your help. I think these are definitely them. What an annoyance incorrect transcriptions and faulty indexing can be!

Thanks so much,

JackB

I’ve seen some nonsensical indexing on Ancestry and this is well up with the best.

Apparently 60 year old  ‘May Kent’ was one of the two wives of 28 year old ‘Jas’ Kent, and the same 28 year old  ‘Jas’ had a 24 year old son. ‘Jas’ was also female (male).
