Do you have the death, burial and census records from Canada?

When he died 20 May 1882 Lambton, Ontario the informant was a James Steed. Birth reported as about 1785 Lisburn County Antrim. There is a James Steed in same cemetery birth 21 Oct 1848 Death 24 Oct 1919.  Parents not listed.  There is a Jane Steed in same cemetery but no birth/death or any relative.

1881 Census has what appears to be John, a widow and family in Sarnia.

John Steed 97
Robert Steed 70
James Steed 39
Rebeca Steed 29
Emiline Steed 7
Agnes N. Steed 5
William Steed 3
Alfred Steed 1
C. C. Colina Steed 25

In 1861 it may be him again in Sarnia with a wife Elizabeth (Noted on document as wife and age 80)  and there is an Elizabeth Steed in cemetery who passed 1884.  No further details

In 1871 he is a widow with most of above  as in 1881

Sadly no marriage document in Cnada records found

The 1919 death cert for the James Steed has his parents as Robert Steed and Agnes Neil.

This looks like James and Family in the 1861 census, courtesy or Library and Archives Canada…

https://central.bac-lac.gc.ca/.item/?id=4391557_00155&app=census1861&op=img

That death cert is available on ancestry if you have access and should also be available on familysearch (free).

As noted by polarbear .  Looks like James Steed death 1919 is not a son but must be related as informant for John Steed.

So to get it straight in my noggin... if Mcadamsd & Polarbear's finds are your John...James was likely a grandson & he & his wife were caring for his father Rob't & grandfather John...making Robert, who was born c1810 Ireland the more likely candidate for first child (also if Elizabeth was born 1828 Ontario, the ship's arrival was between those dates)

John "Stead" in 1861- Religion Wesleyan Methodist  (sometimes wives convinced husbands to change as may have been the case with other family - Robert says Baptist - his son James Presbyterian)
wife Elizabeth b. 1781 likely not his first wife, if you have proof of a previous one, but certainly could have been the mother of Robert. Many men can "make" babies 'til they die...(GRRR) however she's not likely the mother of a birth in 1828... If any of his wives or children were interred in the Methodist cemetery their info may be forever elusive, as sadly, it was eventually closed with not all interred properly relocated.

Because Robert was a ship builder he may have started out as a carpenter/joiner/lumberman.

Some earlier immigrants came over with lumber ships, and Robert likely would have already been building ships a long time before he was in charge of a crew.
-Robert Steed and Hope Mackenzie were the earliest commercial builders in Sarnia and were first employed to make ships for Malcolm Cameron. Two vessels he is known to have built, the Wawanosh of 1873 and the Ida Walker of 1880, were both sailing ships.

-Also:  the Prince Alfred, built 1859 at Sarnia, Ontario, as a tug. Originally was named Michigan...
( entries mostly confusing as to order of dates) but this vessel was armed a decade later for the Fenian threat...

-W.J. Spicer (14/09/64) Ship  Built by R. Steed, Sarnia and launched 14/09/64. Engine from "St. Clair". Ferry.

adding in next post... more on perhaps more family in Ontario
