I am trying to trace the marriage records of Richard Barnard and Mary.

Richard (1787-1854) is buried with Mary in St Stephen’s, Fylingdales. Mary died in March 1851 and from the burial record she was born in approximately 1786.

I have found Richard's 1851 census but not any 1841 census matches for the couple.

Their son William Barnard was born in 1817 in Robin Hoods Bay, but I believe I have found a couple of earlier births that maybe children of this couple. John Jillson Barnard (1811-1812), and John Barnard (1812 to 1848) both in Robin Hoods Bay.

Richard was a Mariner so it could be that he married Mary elsewhere however in all my years of looking I haven’t found any leads.

I have also considered the the name 'Jillson' may have been related to Mary, again however this has returned no matches.

Any help would be most appreciated. Thank you

John Jellson/Jelson/Jilson Barnard was born 18th November 1811 and baptised 17th February 1812.

There is also a record for a Richard Barnard at Fylingdales born 4th October 1810 and baptised 14th October 1810 - abode Bay.

There are several images relating to these 2 baptisms on FindMyPast.

Two Richard Barnards born Robin Hood Bay on FindMyPast's merchant seamen records - both linked to the Amity amongst other vessels.
Lloyd's register has more ships named Amity than you can shake a stick at. Also, newspapers have plenty of "Amity, Barnard" sailings'
Have you checked seamen's records?

Thank you hanes teulu, I have just been reviewing my research logs for the family. I have done quite a bit of research around the ships that Richard and his son William worked on between 1842 and 1851 (for Richard) and until 1858 for William. I have been unable to locate a Masters Certificate for Richard however his Register Ticket number is: 126.794

Previous to these dates I do not appear to have found records I felt confident enough to be the individuals above. I have located the records you referred to above, for the years 1835-1840. The DOB for the most likely candidate is 1791 which is five years out from my Richard. However the records for 1842-1851 are attributed to an individual born in 1785 so three years the other way. On reflection this could be the individual I am looking for and certainly warrants further investigation.

Many Thanks for your time looking into this for me. It is much appreciated.

Thank you for this rosie99. I have taken a look at the records and it seems quite likely that this Richard is the son of the Richard and Mary I am trying to track down. After looking at some of the other comments in this thread and doing some quick searches, the Richard born in 1810 was also likely a mariner so I will be chasing that lead up too.

Many thanks for your time in looking this information out. It is much appreciated

Richard b 1810 was indeed a mariner - he appears to have died in 1848.

Abode on the burial records of both Richards is R H Bay

I was curious as to which St Stephens church they were buried at so checked in the MI booklets which are published by the East Yorkshire FHS.
Your Richards are buried by the old church.
Have you got a copy of the MIs? Well worth getting as memorial stones often mention members of the family who died in other places and also can confirm parent children relationships. BARNARD surnames at both old and new churches. JILLSON at the old church.
The MI for the Richard BARNARD who died in 1848 mentions daughters Mary Jane and Ann who died in infancy, Son William Barry who drowned in the Thames 29 August 1864 aged 25 years and his wife Isabella who died 29 March 1865 aged 25. Richard's wife Margaret died 10 Sep 1869 age 70.

I have occasionally found that families group their graves together and it may be significant that the grave of the Richard who died in 1854 (and his wife) are listed just before a grave of a JILLSON family.
