Plymouth? 1956 - Where was this taken?
« on: Thursday 12 February 26 22:14 GMT (UK) »
The attached photo was taken by my mother when she was in the UK in 1956.

On the back she has written "Plymouth - sea front".

Given the people, and dog, on the left, this image includes a large patch of sand. Can this be Plymouth? If so, any ideas where it might be (or have been) in Plymouth?

If not Plymouth, it will likely be in Devon or Cornwall, photos from this roll of film include Plymouth, St Ives and Land's End.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Possibly Goodrington Sands in Paignton, Devon:

But not able to find a good match for your photo.

Thanks for the suggestion, it would certainly add to our knowledge of how they got to Cornwall from London, but I don't think it can be. Photos of Goodrington from the 1930's and 1950's all seem to have beach huts at the back of the beach, but there are none in mum's photo. Probably counts this out?

Cheers

Goodrington again  ;D
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/186822694288

The promenade at the bottom half of this photo now has lots of beach huts on it.

Your picture is not very clear but the railway line runs just above the beach at Goodrington, I cannot make it out on that picture  :-\.

That structure above the beach could be a row of covered seating

Thanks again. Still not convinced with the Goodrington hypothesis, I'd have to say. But can't definitively exclude it yet.

The photo is blurry, I agree - I think mum suffered from shaking the camera when she pressed the shutter, as there are a few quite sharp images, so the camera was OK.

My problem with the suggested image is the lack of terraced houses. In mum's photo there is one clear long terrace above the beach that seems to be running parallel to the beach. With another further up the cliff/slope. From Google, the few terraces (remaining?) at Goodrington all seem to run perpendicular to the beach.

Agree that the low structure is likely covered seating. Looking further, I found an image with covered seating at Goodrington. Had a different roof (but they can change). But I can't see where that is or was.

Can't find any image with anything that could be the two storey building right on the beach just to the left of the two figures.

Might have another try at sharpening and adjusting the contrast. See if I can bring out any further details this time.

As always, many thanks for the time taken.

I have to agree with fiddlerslass.

The row of houses above the small building (not painted white in the above photo) match.

Closer to Lands End than Plymouth.

I think we have it! Mum's photo would have been taken from the beach below The Malakov, and we have another picture taken from near there, and looking toward the place where this one was taken.

That small building on the beach and the covered seats match up. As do the terraces.

Interestingly, following on from another reply, there is a train line just above the beach, but this image doesn't show that - too blurry.

Many thanks to all who took the time to think about this.

Cheers
