Pro Tools Criteria for Listing Matches in a Shared Match List
« on: Monday 09 February 26 10:36 GMT (UK) »
I am working with one of my matches who has Pro Tools to try to establish the criteria that Pro Tools uses to include/exclude a match in her shared match list with me. Without Pro Tools the methodology is clear - a match will only appear in our shared match list if that match shares 20cM or more with both of us. If a match shares 19cM with me then that match will not be listed irrespective of how much the match shares with my shared match.

With Pro Tools however the criteria used to include/exclude matches in a shared match list are not clear - at least to me. One possibility we have been discussing is that Pro Tools applies the 20cM cut-off but to the match levels added together. So if the match is 9cM to me but 11cM to my shared match then that match will appear in the list (9+11=20cM). However if the match is 9cM to me but 10cM to my shared match then that match will not appear in the list.

Has anyone with Pro Tools got a match in a shared match list that adds up to less than 20cM? That would disprove the theory.

I do not think it works like that.

Ask the question of Ancestry’s Lief and it goes into deciduous mode.

With any selected DNA match the visible shared matches display the cM that I share with each of them but with ProTools I suspect that they restrict the Shared Matches shown to only those who share 20+cM with the selected match.

Interesting to see what is presented by way of shared matches to a specific match when ProTools subscription has expired.

Thanks Biggles. Having re-examined her shared match lists with me I think you are correct. A match will only be shown if I match them by 20cM or more irrespective of the level of her match.

You can compare shared matches with and without pro tools by using the Ancestry app.
Pro tools are not on the app. As a result many matches on there simply say you do not have any matches yet.

The best way to work with another researcher is to share dna results with each other. I've resolved two NPE cases for quite distant matches though the shared cM limits both with and without pro tools would have prevented me finding the answer. By sharing the results two different viewpoints are available, not just a single view filtered by the limits of a computer programme.
