Help please - US Records
« on: Wednesday 04 February 26 14:58 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I am looking for an ancestor who emigrated to the US in 1868 settling originally in Manhattan New York. He was with his parents and siblings - but for the moment I'm concentrating on him.
Robert Thomson born 18th January 1860 Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland.
He is seen in the 1870 US census with the family. Address 281 12 electoral district 22nd Ward NYC age 10.
Father is William Thomson 33 Stonecutter
Mother Isabella (m.s McFarlane) 31 Keeps house
daughters
Margaret    12
William      10 (as above)
Lizzie         9
Isabella      4
All above born in Scotland
Annie        1 born in NY
I never found the family again on a census but i there were 2 more daughters born
Ellen in 1870
Sarah in 1874

Apart from daughter Margaret i found the marriage and whereabouts of the other girls. I never found them all together again on another census. The parents just seem to have disappeared and i thought the same for son William.
Recently while looking for William Jnr again i found a possibility on a 1880 census in Montclair Town, Essex, New Jersey Co Essex district 104 age 20 occupation Draughtsman. After another long search i found a Naturalization Declaration for him on 25 Oct 1883 Address 609 9th Avenue New York New York. His occupation is now Architect and his Sponsor is Edward Lueder who was married to one of his sisters. I was hoping for a bit more info on the Naturalization Declaration about his parents etc. Am i missing something there i wonder?
Now it gets very slow - i find a 1900 census for William Thomson age 42 Architect in Forest Street district 207 Montclair, New Jersey, Essex with wife Hannah age 36 parents from Germany. With them is daughter Ida E age 4 William R son age 7 and Richard H age 7 months. It states married for 16 years so poss 1884. Poor woman has been mother of 9 children of whom these 3 are living.
I have ancestry membership but i feel as if I'm not doing the correct search to see actual documents. I can't find the family again after the 1900 census but neither can i find any deaths or burials. Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you
Ailsa

Aghadowey,
Thanks for that info - I think the William R death must be one of her previous children who died in 1889. Hopefully this William R born 1893 made it :(
I see an 1880 census for family Weribbenhorst with a daughter Johanna age 19 b.1861 Father Luder 57 and mother Christina 52.

I would like to find out what happened to Wm Thomson, his wife Hannah and his family. I can't find them in any further census. They may have moved to another part of the USA or another country.
I never found out what happened to his mother and father after the 1870 census. They are mentioned on the daughters marriage certs but not whether they are alive.

I don't think a naturalization record that early, 1883, would have the parents' names on it. Some doc., later, did ask the father's name, but I don't remember if that was one of the naturalization records or a passport application.
By the way there were 3 docs for naturalization - Declaration of Intention, Petition for Naturalization, and the naturalization itself. You had to wait a certain number of years between the Declaration and the Petition. And you had to be in the US a certain number of years before making your Declaration.

edit:
I had almost posted this when Neale1961 posted, So the next two paragraphs might be unnecessary now.

The fact that Wm (1860, Glasgow) made his own declaration in 1883 probably tells you that his father never was naturalized. I'm pretty sure he would have been naturalized on the strength of his father's. So maybe the father had died, or maybe he never bothered to become a US citizen. You didn't have to.

If you have found most or all of the children in 1880, especially if they are scattered, but not the parents, that would make it pretty likely that at least one of the parents had died before then. At least you likely know where - NY City.

----------------
Marriage records in the US have never asked whether the parents were dead or alive. Not any I have seen anyway.

Wm is in the 1902 Montclair NJ City Directory as
Wm Thomson, arch, 87 1/2 Forest

But is not in the 1904 or 1905 directories. I didn't look any later than that. So your hunch that they moved might be right.

Still looking for William and family and came across another birth-

Richard R./A Thomson (4 Mar.1901 Montclair, Essex, N.J.)
Birth- https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QP39-Q9GM?lang=en (birth index 1901/1903, Richard R., parents- William & Johanna C., reg.#4084)
Birth- https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:6NS8-KNZP?lang=en (Richard A. Thomson- reg.#4084)

Likely that the son Richard H. born 3 Oct.1899 and with parents in 1900 census died 1900/1901.
