Nellie (age 9) in 1880 Census- sister Annie (age 11) is previous entry-

This is interesting and also sad - Is it an orphanage or workhouse? - it doesn't seem to say. Even though it says parents both born in New York and that is not the case - we don't know who would have placed them there.The fact the names (including a Sarah /Sadie) and ages all fit at the right time People say wrong things on certificates as i know only too well!

I think the girls are in an orphanage in 1880. If mother Isabella died the father would have found it very difficult to look after the younger children.

I do agree - but you wonder how long they would be in there? until 16 maybe and then into domestic service. They all seemed to marry and have children and got on quite well. If it's them

You have all been a great help - Thank you. I know it doesn't answer what happened to William and Johanna and if they had any children who survived - ongoing brick wall. I do have some matches on ancestry with the other siblings - but so far no one has replied to my messages.
