Hi all,
I was hoping someone might be able to help me with a tricky problem I am having. It is complicated by father and son having very similar names (but they are definitely two people) and a death registration giving the same name, Wilhelmine Muller, as both the wife and the mother of one of the men. A coincidence? Or a mistake?
The death certificate of the son, Carl Ludwig CHRISTIAN Golz, says he died on 11 Feb 1912 at Glenore Grove near Laidley, Queensland, Australia. He was aged 78 years, 11 months and 14 days. (Born 28 Jan 1833, from another source.)
It says his parents were Carl Ludwig CHRISTLIEB Golz and Wilhelmine Muller. He was born in Damlang, Germany (now Deboleka, Wielkopoloskie?) but had been living in Queensland for 26 years. He was married at Damlang at the age of 21, to Wilhelmine Muller. His living children were Auguste, 49, and Emilie, 47.
On Emilie's marriage and death certificates it says her parents are Carl Golz and Wilhelmene Muller. So that is a reference to Carl Ludwig CHRISTIAN Golz, since we know she is his daughter from Carl CHRISTIAN's death certificate.
On the death certificate of Wilhelmina Golz, who died at Glenore Grove on 29 June 1916, it said she married twice in Germany before coming to Australia. First to Gottlieb Kruger; then to Carl Ludwig CHRISTIAN Golz.
It seems to me based on that evidence that Wilhelmine Muller was the wife of Carl Ludwig CHRISTIAN Golz, but not his mother, despite what the certificate says. My theory is that Carl Ludwig CHRISTIAN's mother -- Carl Ludwig CHRISTLIEB's wife -- may have been named Wilhelmine, but her surname was not Muller.
I think the informant, Carl Ludwig CHRISTIAN Golz's grandson, did not know her maiden name and thought it was Muller, confusing his grandmother and great grandmother.
I was wondering if anyone would have access to German marriage records from (presumably) before Carl Ludwig CHRISTIAN Golz's birth in Jan 1833?
I'd love to know if Carl Ludwig CHRISTLIB Golz's wife was indeed Wilhelmine, but with a different surname, and if that has caused this confusion.
Thanks,
Geoff Turner
