Royal Navy Pensioner 1911 Henry Sherrington
« on: Sunday 01 February 26 20:48 GMT (UK) »
I've been trying to find out more about my mother's side of the family and have come across Henry (Harry on some documentation) Sherrington, her Great Grandfather. He was born in August 1834 to parents living in Gosport, Hampshire. In most subsequent census returns he is noted as a carpenter/joiner or a similar trade but in 1911 he is recorded as a Naval Pensioner. I can find no trace of Navy service being mentioned anywhere else. Where can I look to find any more information on this?
(A couple of other things might lead to some sort of connection. There is a report of a Henry Sherrington being found guilty of Larceny in 1872 but I'm not sure if this is my relative or someone else. Could he have been sent to the navy to serve his 7 year sentence? Also, his son, Douglas, later served in the navy for several years. Maybe a bit of parental influence?)
Any ideas would be gratefully received as I'm a bit confused. Thanks.

On the original copy of the 1911 census Henry wrote None for occupation, this has been crossed out and replaced by Naval Pensioner in another hand. He could have been a civilian carpenter employed by the Navy in the dockyard and not actually served in the Navy.

Hampshire Advertiser has someone of that name - topic military - from 3 Oct 1874 Southampton

Perhaps someone with access could see what that’s all about.

Have you got his occupation when he married?

Paul, I assume you have his wife's death in 1912 and possibly his the following year.

Thanks everyone for all the replies. I hadn't yet seen the death reports so they will come in handy, thanks. I'll have a look at the National Archive research guides. I wonder if he did carpentry work in the dockyard.
Thanks again for all the replies.

Where is Henry in 1871?

Not with his wife who is Head of Household and described as 'Wife of Joiner now absent'
Her 1 year old daughter Ada was born in Norfolk

They are living next door to other joiners, one a dockyard joiner

In 1871 Henry a carpenter is lodging in Coulsdon, Surrey with a stone mason.
