Oh Good!
Victoria will be pleased when she gets back to us ;D.

I am getting the impression that Charles was trying not to be spotted.

In his WW2 enlistment he gives a birth date of 4th May 1892, and rather cleverly, he states Yes married and gives the date of his marriage as requested which is 1919. Only the wife is not the woman he married in 1919 ;) It's Anita.

Hi Victoria,
Great to see you have been online since our recent postings which have maybe answered your query.

The usual thing at this point would be a reply from you to confirm you've seen it, and perhaps a comment and/or your thoughts ;D

I'm beginning to wonder if we have the correct Charles Squire enlisting in WW2 under surname of SquireS.
https://nominal-rolls.dva.gov.au/veteran?id=408001&c=WW2
The WW2 enlistment has the "S" added and  different NoK  That chap enlisted at Hay NSW on 03 Jul 1942, giving "TOOGUMBIE" as his residence;  There is a "Toogimbie Station" near(ish!) to Hay.

There are many Charles Squire/s listed in Victoria/NSW - some even in Mortlake as Charles SQUIRES at the same time as Charles SQUIRE.

These entries seem to me to be for the Charles we're searching for:

Electoral rolls
all Charles SQUIRE in Mortlake, Vic:

1924, 1931, 1936, 1937
 at Shadwell Park, Mortlake, farmer
with Minnie Squire, hd

In 1935 he was to pay  543pounds to add an extra 41 acres to land he already had in Mortlake.  On this document he signs to say that he will be able to work this extra land (with what he already had) profitably.

There are a number of entries in Sands Directory - the most recent that I saw:

Victorian Directory (Sands) 1942
Charles Squire, farmer, Mortlake
If he's still listed in Mortlake in 1942 it seems unlikely that he would be enlisting in Hay in the same year - however, Sands directories aren't always accurate.

I came across this one as well but it's in NSW (nearish to Hay), perhaps he's the one enlisting in 1942.
1919 Squire, Charles, Rock Grove, Darlington station hand

Edit to add:
Birth registration which fits date of WW2 enlistment and also age given in WW1 papers:

Addition re baptism:
At St James' church, parish of Holy Trinity, Kingston upon Hull
Baptism 30 May 1894, Birth date 04 May 1894
Charles Albert
Parents: Louisa, Walter George, surname: Squire
Address: 14 xxxxx Place?, William St,
I can't read the father's occupation.

This is the address given as the birthplace of Charles Squire who enrolled in WW1 in Australia.

Oh my - this chap!  ??? ::)

"04 May 1894"

It is also the birth day and month given on his ww2 record with Anita as wife.

The year is given as 1892 instead of 1894.

Same bloke.  Pretty sure.

Same parents as on your baptism finding died in North Sydney.
Anita lived in North Sydney.

Thanks Judith and  Sue you are on the right track at one point I thought he might have returned to England but unable to find any travel details. All the detail on his war record are correct. I know he used Chas rather than Charlie sometimes. Thanks again for your help

I think you're right Sue, it's the same man - I made that comment before I'd gone further and found the corroborating facts.

None of our business  ::) (although much of genealogy seems to be minding other people's business ;D)  but it's intriguing that he moved quite a way from Mortlake where he seemed to reside for a long time and used the surname with the added 's' while the records in Victoria are almost always without the 's'.
