Ah brilliant so his mother seems to be an Elizabeth, thank you for looking that up.
I am not very experienced with look ups so appreciate the help.
Is there any way to find out Elizabeth's maiden name?
Regards

His '41 census entry shows a change of occupation. In '38 when he stole the copper boiler he was a whitesmith. In '41 he's an Ag. Lab.

Thank you for this info, I did wonder what he was in prison for!
Regards

His '41 census entry shows a change of occupation. In '38 when he stole the copper boiler he was a whitesmith. In '41 he's an Ag. Lab.

Whitesmith aka brazier or tinsmith - typically itinerant worker in white metal (as opposed to the black metal a blacksmith uses in a forge).

When the 41 census was taken he may well have been employed as an ag lab as the travelling season hadn't yet started.

By '47 he was a "smith" at a coachbuilders from whom he stole brass and iron.
