Deans Court Bangor- Catherine Owen
« on: Sunday 25 January 26 19:57 GMT (UK) »
Hi I am currently researching Catherine Owen who was living at 17 deans court Bangor 1881,1891,1901,1911

Can anyone tell me the history of Deans Court as I am finding it hard to find any information.
Has it changed names over the years?
I am hoping finding more information will help me track back to trace the correct Catherine Owen. Who her husband was and parents.

Thank you for any info?

Deans Court is off Dean Street in Bangor on the 1899 25 inch map. It looks as if the area has been remodelled by the 1940s. Gwynedd Archives would maybe be the best people to contact regarding its history.

Verification

Get a copy of the marriage certificate of William Nicholson to Ellen Owen reg. 1876 Bangor

You will get her father's name, witnesses who may be family and her former name that appears to be Pritchard.

Children with William Nicholson from GRO Index

William Nickolson reg. 1881 Bangor mother's maiden name Prichard

I'm just expanding upon Raybistre's reply #1

Deans Court on the 1888 Town Plan

Same, but overlaid on a modern street map, slide the slider at bottom left to reveal:

Still shown on this 1913 map

The most recent BNA hit for "Deans Court Bangor" is from 1934 (the earliest is 1864)

In 1892, advertised for sale along with several other properties in the vicinity, the freehold of "Five cottages, Nos. 9, 11, 13, 15, and 17, DEAN'S COURT, Bangor"

Dean's Court appears in an address search at FindMyPast in 1881-1921 inclusive but since it appears in newspapers in 1864 (above) presumably the absence from 1871 is an error at FindMyPast. And Brook Row, the street immediately to the west of Dean's Court appears as early as 1841.

29 June 1934: Caernarvon & Denbigh Herald
Quote
Slum Clearance Schemes.
INQUIRY AT BANGOR.

At Bangor last week Mr. R. D. Jones held an inquiry on behalf of the Health Ministry, into an application of the City Council to confirm certain orders made by the Council under the Housing Act of 1930.

The slum clearance orders of the Council affected five areas in the city, with eighty four houses and 424 persons. The areas affected are Cae Bach, Arvonia-terrace, and Hendrwen-road, in Glandda; Roberts-place, in Garth ; and Well-street, Dean's Court, Brook-row, Dean Street, and Garden-square in the centre of the town.

Mr Elwyn Jones in presenting the case for the City Council, said the orders under discussion were the first instalment of the Council's five-year programme for slum clearances. The Council had undertaken the task of clearing the town of unhealthy areas with vision and energy. The entire plan proposed the demolition of 560 houses, and the rehousing of 2,160 people. The Council had endeavoured to observe the rightful interests of the owners of property.

Evidence was given for the City Council by Dr. Lewis Travis (M. O. H.), Mr. Price Davies (Borough Surveyor), and Mr. T. Rogers Jones (Borough Sanitary Inspector).

OBJECTIONS.
On behalf of Mr. Edward Hogan, the owner of Nos. 5 and 6, Cae Bach and 1, 2, 3, and 4, Arvon Terrace, Mr. F. W. Pozzi objected to the confirmation of the orders. Mr. Hogan was prepared to spend a reasonable amount in putting the houses referred to in a reasonable state of repair.

It was pointed out that, according to vital statistics put in evidence, the rate of infantile mortality and infectious diseases was very low in the locality referred to, and it was contended that the houses were not injurious to the health of the inhabitants.

Mr. W. A. Morgan appeared for the owner of houses in Garden-square and Dean's Court, and he also objected to the confirmation of the orders.

Mr. H. Crebbin, appearing for the owners of property at Robert's-place, said those houses commanded a wonderful view of the bay.

A number of objectors appeared in person.

The inspector said he would make a personal visit to the property affected.

You mention "... history of Dean's Court...". Couple of hits on Welshnewspapers. One, I think, mentions an Owen.

One in Welsh about neglecting children - not Qwen.
https://newspapers.library.wales/search?rows=10&page=1&sort=score&order=desc&alt=&query=%22deans%20court%22&range[min]=1804-01-01T00:00:00Z&range[max]=1919-12-31T00:00:00Z

Added - URL not delivering. So, just pop "Dean's Court" (including "   ") in Search,
https://newspapers.library.wales/

Try search key "Dean Court" also.

You could try "Welsh Journals". Same again just pop "Dean's Court" in Search - 27 hits.

Note - I am not trying to associate with the surname Owen, just info re "Dean's Court"

https://journals.library.wales/

NOTE - you could try searching Welsh newspapers for your "rellie" but you'll appreciate it's a very common name - more hits than you can shake a stick at. That's when the filters might help.
