Police Attestation Records on joining the police
« on: Sunday 25 January 26 08:16 GMT (UK) »
Has anyone consulted these records? I think that Find My Past has some.  I am wondering if it is worth joining FindMyPast to see them.  Another issue is that there are various tiers of membership and I  cant see what tier they are accessible and what the cost would be.  Has anyone looked at these and make a suggestion please?

FindMyPast has the following record sets:
Hampshire, Portsmouth Police Staff Records, 1908-1924
London Metropolitan Police Attestation, 1829-1972
Manchester Police Index 1812-1941 (full service records can be obtained from the Greater Manchester Police Museum)
Wiltshire Police Officers Appointed, 1839-1926
Yorkshire, Leeds City Police 1899-1939
Also several different Irish police force records.
They all appear to be available with a basic membership. I have not used any of them.

Thanks Andy.

I have used the Portsmouth and London records. They are not complete records of service. Mine were register books listing the basic details of each person. The entries often contain notes relating to cause of leaving the service - killed in the blitz for example.

I couldn't find the man I was looking for in FindMyPast Metropolitan Police records, but he did show up in the Metropolitan Police Pension records on Ancestry. Details there included date of joining M. Police, length of service, date of resignation, pay at that date, place & d.o.b., single/married, date & place of marriage, description of both him and his wife, witnessed signatures of both.

In case you are not aware the Metrolpollitan Police have a museum and archive, located in Sidcup. Unfortunately the main crime museum is not open to the public except for special organised tours, but the archive is accessible on Wednesdays. You need to book an appointment. It is highly recommended that you discuss your research needs before booking a visit to avoid a wasted journey.  More details here: https://www.met.police.uk/police-forces/metropolitan-police/areas/about-us/about-the-met/met-museums-archives/

If it is relevant to your enquiry, the City of London Police archive is housed at the London Archives in the North of the City. https://www.thelondonarchives.org/your-research/research-guides/city-of-london-police-records-of-police-officers

Hi
years ago, I was researching an ancestor who joined the Met in the 1850s and obviously encountered the MEPO files.
There was a Rootschat member who had meticulously photographed the files and uploaded them to Flickr. Sadly, his user name escapes me at the moment..it was a good while back.
A quick google search  gave me

There may be others, trial and error!
