Thank you Isabel.
I don't think that I will be so fortunate.  My candidate was charged with receiving goods.  He was found to be not guilty but his wife served a short prison term.  His sister in law however was convicted for the initial offence and transported to  Van Diemens Land. He was given a good character reference by the Police Inspector he reported to so that may have led to his acquittal. It will be interesting to find out if tge record mentions those sad events.

Thankyou Rebel
I found the person that in had been hoping to find in the documents that your post referred to.  It took me a which to figure out how the contents were recoded but the search was successful.  The persons who made the character recommendations for appointment were helpful in confirming that it is the correct person.  Thanks again.

I am to far away for a personal visit but it is helpful to know where I can obtain further information.
Thanks again.

Glad you found your man in the records and sorry I couldn't explain them better!
It's a good 15 years since I trailed through them myself. but as I eventually found my man too, I was sure that you could crack it as well!

Hi Rebel.
For thise who are interested.  The volumes I saw included the date of appointment name and date resigned or dismissed  (no other details), and two names of persons recomnending the candidate for appointment, with the their location (town and ccounty). Most helpful.

I saw no service details or place where they were stationed.
