Irish ancestors arriving in Bristol early 1800s

Hello

Following lots of help and information from RootsChat members a while ago, I found the correct line of a branch of my ancestry and was delighted to discover my 4x great grandparents were Joannis Barry and Anstice Connel who were apparently from Cork, Ireland.  It looks like they arrived in Bristol around 1809 as their son, Thomas, was baptised there in a Catholic Church.  I’ve managed to follow his line (with one or two issues to check) but at the moment I’m focusing on his parents as I’ve not been able to find them in Bristol in the 1841 census or burial records after their approximate arrival around 1809.  I would also love to find out anything about them in Ireland (and their ancestors) prior to them arriving in Bristol.

Below is the information I have, I’m not sure however how or if it would be possible to find further information about this Irish line and wondered if anyone could help?

Thomas’ Catholic baptism 2nd Feb 1809, St Mary on the Quay, Colston Avenue, Bristol (it also stated he was born 16th Jan 1809 – I’m not sure if his birth was in Bristol or Ireland but in the 1841-1861 census he put Ireland).

Thomas married Harriet Derrick in 1831.  I found a marriage between Thomas Barry and Harriett Derrick on 11th April 1831 in the same Catholic Church, St Mary on the Quay, Colston Avenue, Bristol and also in a CofE Church in Backwell, Somerset a week or so earlier on 3rd April 1831.  (I've not had much luck researching Harriet Derrick either.)

Any help or advice about Joannis Barry and Anstice Connel would be really appreciated!

They are both fairly common names. John Barry and Anastasia Connell.
I think you might be unlucky time-wise in relation to getting any records in Ireland.

Yes I thought it would be difficult but having not had to research Irish ancestors before I thought I would ask in case anyone had any knowledge.

But thank you for confirming the English version of their names, I knew Joannis would be John but didn't know what Anstice was.  It may help me find some records in Bristol for them, more children baptised etc.

As Dublin says, you are search quite common names.
I have found this in the indexes on one site and here is the record.
St Peter and St Paul, Cork
Transcribed as Thomas, 5th June 1796 but looks like July.

How do you know their origins are Cork?

Their son Thomas put in Ireland in the 1841 and 1851 censuses but Cork, Ireland in 1861.

His baptism in Bristol was 2nd Feb 1809 but his birth recorded as 16th Jan 1809 so a short window for them to have travelled over to England, I don't know how long it would have taken in the 1800s.

If by any chance that 1796 birth was called Thomas and it was the right couple, the child may have died and a second child named after him.

Yes thanks, I was just thinking the same thing!

It might help to find another child they had who had lived but I've not had much luck with that either.

Have you found Jacobus/James and Anna Maria - Clifton, 1812 and 1814. Motherhas become Anne
