Lancashire Rileys
« on: Yesterday at 20:55 »
Hi Everyone,
I tried this search some years ago with no luck, so I think it's time to try again.  I have a brick wall with my Great Grandfather Edward Riley.  He was born in 1851, place unknown, father's name Thomas, who died sometime before 1878.  Mother unknown .  Married Agnes Martin in 1878 and died in 1890. His daughter was born in October of 1890 and he was listed as deceased on her birth cert.  After his death, Agnes married John Houghton.  He and Agnes had 5 children.  My Grandfather Edward (b 1880), William (b 1882), Thomas (b 1885), Patrick (b 1888), and Annorah (b 1890).  All born in Wigan. His last known address was 4 Lord St, Ince-in-Makerfield.   No other family information prior to 1851.  No information on his death, or where it occurred.  He is definitely not the son of Thomas and Mary Ann Riley of Bury. I haven't found him in any of the Wigan cemeteries.  Any information would be greatly appreciated.  I have more information on his wife and children.

No death in 1890 in Wigan for an Edward Riley.  Did he die elsewhere?

Hi,
Thanks for responding.  I really appreciate it.  Now you see my dilemma.  I don't know where he was between children.  All the children were born at a different address in the Sholes area of Wigan.  I know that he worked at various mining jobs from the children's birth certificates.  With the exception of William's.  Edward's occupation on his said that Edward was a soldier.  The rest all said labourer or work at a colliery.  There was an Edward of the right age who died working on a cargo ship off the coast of Greece in 1890 but so far i can't prove it was him. 3 of the children, Edward (my grandfather), Thomas, and Annorah immigrated to the US.  None had any information on his death.  William died in WW I, Patrick remained in England, in Burnley, where they moved after Edward's death.  His family now lives in New Zealand and don't have any more information than I have.  None of the extended family know much of anything about Edward Sr.  JohnJr
