Maiden Name Conundrum - Charles W Brandon
« on: Yesterday at 12:22 »
I'm back after a long hiatus due to illness and I've walked straight into a puzzle. I've probably been looking at it too long and am a bit rusty. I'd really appreciate some help. My gut is telling me this is Charles' family, but the mother's maiden name is a stumbling block.

According to his marriage cert (1875 Hackney to Charlotte Riley) his father was Thomas Brandon, a labourer. Charles Brandon according to censuses was born c.1857 in Harlesden Green near Willesden. His parents were Thomas c.1825 Buckinghamshire (YOB inconsistent. between 1825-1834) and Ann c.1832 Somerset.

The only GRO entry that matched is
Year   Qtr   District   Vol   Page   Reg   Ent No   DOR
1857     Mar     HENDON     03A     84
Charles William Brandon MMN Jones
I could not find a corresponding marriage between a Thomas Brandon and Ann Jones.

However, when I looked up the other child that I'd found on the 1861 census, Emily b.1860 Hackney, MMN is Weaver. Them being in Hackney with the 1861 census. I did a no first name search from 1850 to 1860 with MMN Jones and found nothing but Charles in male or female. I then did the same for Weaver and found Charles Thomas Plumley. b.1851 Hendon d.1852, Hannah Elizabeth b.1853 Hendon d.1859, Sarah Elizabeth b.1858 Hendon d.1859 (bap'd Sarah Ann I believe), plus Emily.

I have found a marriage cert for Thomas Brandon and Ann Plumley Weaver 1851 Paddington. She is listed as a minor at the time of marriage, so this fits.

I ordered the DI of Charles' birth certificate and it states that his parents are Thomas Brandon Ag Lab and Ann formerly Jones.

I'm of the mind that a mistake has just been made with the MMN on Charles' entry, but I would appreciate some fresh eyes on this in case I'm missing something obvious as it's been a while since I've done this.

Thanks in advance.

I am clutching at straws really.  In 1871 the Smith family are in Hackney  with her father Charles Weaver age 67 bn Somerset (Hannah is 32)

Charles Weaver married Elizabeth Plumley 30 Apr 1829 at Nailsea

Ann PlumBley Weaver was baptised at Nailsea, Somerset 14 Aug 1831, parents Charles and Elizabeth, fathers occ Labourer.  It would fit your Ann Brandon  :-\

ADDED
Who was the informant on the birth cert that gave mmn Jones

It was the father. He possibly couldn't remember, so just picked a name out of the hat. I hadn't thought about that ;D
