The family of William and Hannah Stonier of Biddulph, and other places
« on: Tuesday 13 January 26 12:10 GMT (UK) »
I need a little help, please, and apologies in advance for the lengthy post.
I have a William Stonier, born on the 18th April 1826 in Biddulph to a William Stonier and his wife Martha Pierpoint Watts. He appears to have been baptised twice:

•   18 April 1826, Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, Astbury, Cheshire
•   9 May 1830, St. Lawrence, Biddulph, Staffordshire

He had 7 known children:

•   Charles (1857 - ), born Ladderidge with Leek
•   Thomas (1859 - ) born Ladderidge with Leek
•   William (1864 - ) born Alton, Staffordshire
•   Joseph (1866 - ) born Alton, Staffordshire
•   Rowland J (1868 - ) born Denstone, Staffordshire
•   Nancy (1869 - ) also known as Annie, born Denstone, Staffordshire
•   John William (1873 - ) born Okamoor, Staffordshire.

William appears of the following censuses:

•   1841 Biddulph, Staffordshire, England HO107 Piece 986 Book 15 Folio 21 Page 1, with his parents
•   1861 Biddulph, Staffordshire, England RG9 Piece 2612 Folio 61 Page 5 (Schedule 23) with several of his siblings
•   1871 Cheadle, Staffordshire, England RG10 Piece 2890 Folio 99 Page 16 (Schedule 85), with wife Hannah and children Charles, Thomas, William, Joseph and Nancy
•   1881 Cheadle, Staffordshire, England RG11 Piece 2747 Folio 103 Page 20 (Schedule 89), with wife Hannah and children Rowland, Nancy, and John William.
•   1891 Leek, Staffordshire, England RG12 Piece 2187 Folio 34 Page 11 (Schedule 61), with children Annie (Nancy) and John William. Hannah is not present, but William is not listed as a widow.
•   1901 Heaton, Staffordshire, England RG13 Piece 2626 Folio 35 Page 10 (Schedule 57). The head of the household is his son John William. Also in the household is Annie. William is now listed as a widower.
•   1911 Macclesfield, Cheshire, England RG14 Piece 16554 (Schedule 58). William is living with his children Annie and John William. However, the census suggests curiously that he has only 3 children, of whom two are still living.

William died in 1911, and his probate calendar entry reads

Quote
STONIER William of Weathercock Farm Heaton Staffordshire died 2 July 1911 Probate London 1 November to William John Joward Stonier boot factor Samuel Mellor brickmaker and Sarah Mellor spinster. Effects 4586 3s. 8d.

William John Howard Stonier is the son of William’s brother Richard.

Charles, Thomas, William and Joseph are only found on the 1871 census. Rowland only appears on the 1881 census. Nancy (Annie) appears on the 1871, 1881, 1891, 1901, and 1911 censuses. John William appears on the 1881, 1891, 1901, and 1911 censuses.

The help I need is, as all my search strategies have so far come up with no results:

•   Why the double baptism, unless I have made a mistake?
•   There is clearly an 1851 census that I have been unable to track down for William senior.
•   I cannot find a marriage for him and Hannah.
•   There should be 1861 census entries for Charles, and Thomas. Plus, of course, later census entries for all the children.
•   There are no Birth Index entries for any of the children that I can find.
•   There does not appear to be any baptisms for any of the children.
•   The are no death index entries that I have found for any of the children, yet.

It may be that William’s marriage and the children’s baptisms are non-conformist, and the images or transcriptions are not yet online. I may be that William and Hannah were never married, and therefore the children’s births were registered under the mother’s maiden name. The lack of census entries may be that the children died before reaching maturity.

Following the very substantial increase in fees for wills, I have not yet ordered a copy of William’s will – I have at least 6 other wills for this family that before the price increase I would have had no hesitation in ordering.

Any ideas on how to further this piece of research, where to look, etc., would be very much appreciated.

Very Very weird long shot

There is a tree on Family Search that has a William Stonier but married to Martha with a daughter called Hannah ??? ??? ???

Birth: 18 April 1826 Wesleya, Congleton, Cheshire, England
Death: 1911 Leek, Staffordshire, England
Christening: 9 May 1830 Biddulph, Stafford, England

Wife:MARTHA 1829 ????
Married c 1850 in Staffordshire

Daughter :HANNAH 1860

Parents: William Stoner and Martha Pierpoint Watts

https://www.familysearch.org/en/tree/pedigree/landscape/2MP9-LKV

Very odd but is there a chance that there are two Williams and their trees have gotten mixed up over time or as this tree shows one is his DoB and the other his Baptism but both listed as Baptism at some point ??? ???

Apologies in advance if Ive missed read your post or the information on the tree and wasted your time.

Good luck and happy hunting  :) :)

Looking at images of the original entry, the nonconformist entry in 1826 is a notification of his birth. At no point is the word baptism mentioned.

Thanks, Emeltom. You are quite right; on the same page there are several entries with just a birth date, and some with both birth and baptism. I must have been using the wrong glasses when I was reading them  ;D and assumed the date was a baptism.

So you are looking for Hannah in 1861 with children Charles and Thomas.  She is probably the wife of Charles BRASSINGTON living in Cheddleton.

Thank you Debra. I will take a look at what you have found. It certainly makes the 1911 census entries make more sense.

Hi
Just to add burials at St Giles Cheadle
Francis William Stonier Brassington 7.2.1877 age 12 Green dale son of Hannah
Rowland Joseph Stonier Brassington 25.1.1883 s of late Hannah Brassington Green Dale
Hannah Brassington  Green dale 22.1.18813 age 47 wife of Charles.

Charles Brassington outlived them all.
https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/230016576/charles-brassington

So Hannah couldn't remarry.

The other William Stanier/Stonier married Martha Bailey at Horton 21.9.1856 .Unfortuatley no details of father.
Lots of Kids
Jane 1858,Hannah 1860,Charlotte 1862 ,Elizabeth 1863 ,William 1865 ,Emma 1867.
So if it is the same bloke he's living a double life.

Thanks, ciderdrinker.

I have, I think, finally demolished this brick wall.

William Stonier was the eldest son of William Stonier and Martha Pierpoint Watts. William senior had fingers in many pies, one of which was as a timber merchant. William junior followed his father in this trade. William junior never married, and can be followed through the censuses from 1841 to 1911, with the exception of 1851. He died on the 2 July 1911 in Heaton, Staffordshire, probably at his home of Weathercock Farm.

Hannah Smith Bloor, daugher of Joseph Bloor, married Charles Brassington on the 29 December 1853 in Cheddleton, and had by him three sons, Charles, Thomas, and Joseph.

At some point between 1861 and 1871, Hannah went to live with William Stonier.

in 1871, Hannah's husband is still alive and living with his brother at Mount Pleasant, Cheddleton. In 1881, Charles is living alone at Hall House in Cheddleton. The census in both cases states he is married. In 1891, Charles is living in Cheddleton with Mary A Brassingtion, listed as his wife, presumably having married again after Hannah died in 1881. Charles died in 1896 and was buried un Cheddleton.

William and Hannah went on to have several children of their own:
Francis William Stonier Brassington (1864-1877)
Joseph Rowland Stonier Brassington (1866-1883)
William Brassington, aka William Stonier (1867- )
Nancy Brassington, aka Annie Stonier, Nancy Stonier, and Annie Nancy Stonier (1869-1928)
John William Stonier (1873-1911)

As my principal interest is on the Stonier's, I have yet to investigate Hannah's earlier children.

The Stonier family is a problem to research as they seem to be quite mobile, and not only is the surname and its many variants common in the area, but the first names seem to be chosed from a very small set, with William particularly common. I am focussing at present on reconstructing the family that lived in Biddulph and particularly in an area called Hurst: the family of often referred to as the Stoniers of the Hurst, and then, within that family, any that had an interest in mills of milling of any sort.

William junior left a will, but at £16 a go these days, and with at least 8 others in the extended family also leaving wills, I'm going to have to wait for a lottery win before I order any :)
