yes that's his death,,,,, I'm trying to find him in 1939 now.
He didn't marry until 1940 so he will be single.
In 1940 he gives the address; the Barracks, Townsend lane?, Kingsbury, NW3.

The fact he married in Hendon strongly suggests he was "Military" of some nature. That being the case he would not be recorded in 1939 register.

OK, thanks for that (something I didn't know)

I have sent a mail to Archives local studies at Newham.gov with an inquiry as to any possible records from Central Home, Leyton, West Ham that may exist which may reveal how my grandfather grew up and when he left the institution.

Then I definately need a copy of this and shall have to throw oodles of cash at the Essex records office

Why?  If you want to look at the FindMyPast transcription check if your local library has free access or take out a free trial on FindMyPast.

You will be wasting whatever fee Essex RO charge as the original record is not going to give a fathers name or any witnesses names.  It's extremely unlikely you will get any more info than is available online.

Not on Familysearch sadly. Both Ancestry and FindMyPast

Unfortunately posting restrictions apply to the 1939 register so we are only able to give details that are available from the free index.

Check with your local library to see if they have free access to either -or both - Ancestry & FindMyPast

Hello CaroleW,
thank you, I do realize that there are posting restrictions, I actually have recent access to Ancestry (unfortunately not FindMyPast) and for some reason, I guess lack of experience with Ancestry cannot find the 1939 entry?
I was going to concentrate on Henry George Evans firstly until I had found all I could and then go on to Catherine Jane Bell but now, due to the comment from SS: 'I see Catherine was living in Hendon with mother and siblings in 1939', I am curious as yo why father Armstrong Bell is not mentioned.
Anyway, back to fumbling around with Ancestry  ::)
