"What was a high Sheriff in 1630s Cheshire?".

My 10th G Grandfather Sir Thomas Stanley b 1597 was a high Sheriff of Cheshire in the 1630s . So can anyone tell me what a high Sheriff was then ? Thank you .

He was the chief official of a county, in this case Cheshire.  He handled the administration of the shire.
