This is not much help really, but I thought I would post anyway.
I can’t find the family in 1901 and 1911.
However, in 1921, there is a granddaughter, Irene M Thornton. Presumably she is a daughter of Caroline or Margaret?

GRO has her birth as Irene May Halleren Thornton - no mother’s surname.

When she marries in Oldham in 1925, she marries with that full name but gives her father as ‘Arthur Thornton’, soldier deceased.
It would seem as though she has combined two men - uncle Arthur and perhaps Mr Halleren, was a soldier.

Hi Rosie99, unfortunately there were two Arthur Ernest Thorntons born about the same time I think this one in NorthBucks  married Annie Wenman, I suspect this one may not be the same as the one from Sts and Oldham. Thank you so much for taking the time to look

Smithy, On this occasion I think you are incorrect in your thinking, I can see why you think as you have. Whilst the marriage of Arthur E Thornton to Annie Wenman took place in Winslow, Bucks this is not your Arthur. They married there as this was Elizabeth's home parish.

Births Jun 1896
Wenman    Elizabeth Annie        Winslow    3a   780

Births Jun 1890
Thornton    Arthur Ernest        Watford    3a   552        dob 25th April 1890.

1921 Arthur by himself--occupation casual Lather as per 1911 census
Elizabeth Annie with son (John Tassy Thornton) at her parents in Winslow recorded as Thoruton

war register

Ernest A   Thorton   25 Apr 1889   Male   Lather Hand   Married

The 3 children on the war register are all Thornton/Wenman births.

Death

Deaths Mar 1958
THORNTON    Ernest A    67    Watford    4b   342

Probate below.  Address as per war register

So I believe the death found originally is correct.

Final offering, believe Arthur can be found in war register at

20 Carrington Road, Aylesbury, Aylesbury M.B., Buckinghamshire, England

FindMyPast has---Carrest A (Arthur E)

In 1921 he would appear to have an engineering background and war register is similar.

I tought a possible good candidate too (see Softly's post above) was the Ernest Arthur Thornton living at 20 Carrington Road with the Wheeler family b 4 Nov 1889.
He is still at that address in at least 1956 according to electoral registers.
Described in a funeral notice for Leonard George Wheeler in 1943 as a friend.

Cathy
Still on list there in 1967 with a Kate E Wheeler but not 1968. Down as Arthur Ernest Thornton. Possibly in Redfield old people's home in Winslow in 1968, would be interesting to see if that might be the Arthur who died in 1969.
