Help Interpreting Parish Record
« on: Sunday 04 January 26 02:23 GMT (UK) »
Hi, first post here, so hello everyone!

Please take a look at this record! https://registers.nli.ie/pages/vtls000633941_119 It appears to show marriages in 1846. The names I'm looking at are near the bottom, Thos. Raftery and Mary Leonard. They are clearly written on the page, but they are not indexed on the record hosted by Ancestry.com; the names below them, Mich Hegarty and Patk Leonard, are indexed in the ancestry.com record. I am not sure whether this is some kind of mistake in indexing, or if it perhaps indicates that they were witnesses to someone else's marriage?

I am extremely grateful for any clarity on this!

Welcome to RootsChat, everybodyscream! :)

Just looking at this, and I'm not familiar with what I assume are Irish records, if the names of Michael Hegerty and Patrick Leonard (assuming forenames from the abbreviated versions written in this record) are both male, so it seems likely that they were witnesses, Patrick  being a relative of Mary Leonard.  BUT wait a minute - is the abbreviated name Patrick or Catherine?  Not sure, even with comparing similar characters.  And the names of Michael Hegerty and Patrick/Catherine Leonard are written twice, so were they witnesses or partners at each other's weddings?

The indentation of the lines seems to indicate a new entry, and the initials (?) at the end of some of the lines are those of the priest or parish clerk, maybe.

Sorry for this rather woolly reply, which doesn't seem to be very helpful, as it raises more questions than answers.  :-\   Others will be familiar with Irish records and may be more helpful to you.

Ancestry indexing is notorious. Often wrong.
You can see it yourself in what you say is their index entry - a same-sex marriage in 1846? I think not!!

Your interpretation is correct: Marriage of Thos. Raftery and Mary Leonard, with witnesses Mich Hegarty and Patk Leonard.

That register has the look of one recreated from possibly more than one. The writing is fairly even and consistent, which is not usual for a document one completes bit by bit.
I'd say the priest doing it just wrote the witnesses to the Raftery/Leonard marriage twice by mistake.
