18th century Newcastle non-conformists WILLIAM and ELIZABETH BURRELL
« on: Sunday 04 January 26 00:19 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

Rootschatters have been very helpful recently on other queries I've had, so I thought I might put myself at your mercy again about these people. I'll list what I already have, and what I'd like to know. I realise that because they were Presbyterians their records are harder to find. I had to go through National Archives to get some of the pieces I have. They are my 5 x great grandparents. I am in Brisbane, Australia, because their daughter Elizabeth was a convict, but that's another story.

William and Elizabeth are mentioned in three baptism images I have.

Their son William was baptised on 16 Aug 1778 at High Bridge Presbyterian Meeting, Newcastle Upon Tyne, Northumberland, England. "Son of Wm and Elizth, baptized at High Bridge 16 August 1778." (I have that image)

I don't have a marriage for him but I have his burial on 14 Jan 1833 at All Saints, Newcastle Upon Tyne, Northumberland, England. The age corresponds.

County Northumberland Place Newcastle upon Tyne Church name All Saints Register type Bishop's Transcripts Register entry number 232 Burial date 14 Jan 1833 Burial person forename William Burial person surname BURRELL Person age 53 Burial person abode Quay

Their daughter Elizabeth was baptised on 8 Mar 1781 at High Bridge. "Name: Elizabeth Birll Event Type: Baptism Christening Date: 08 Mar 1781 Christening Place: Newcastle on Tyne, Northumberland Father's Name: William Birll Mother's Name: Elizabeth Birll Affiliate Publication Number:  RG8_0086 (I have that image)

I have Elizabeth's story covered pretty well now, including her English husband and six English children, because she was my 4 x great grandmother, the convict who came to Australia, where she gave birth to my 3 x great grandmother.

Their other daughter Mary was baptised on 19 Dec 1783 at Castle Garth Presbyterian. "Name: Mary Burrell Christening Date: 19 Dec 1783 CASTLE GARTH PRESBYTERIAN-NC,NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE,NORTHUMBERLAND,ENGLAND Birth Date: 17 Nov 1783 Father: Wm. Burrell Mother Elz." (I have that image)

Mary married John Laycock, of Bradford, Yorkshire, on 7 Jun 1805 at All Saints, Newcastle Upon Tyne, Northumberland, England. (I have record but no image)

On 14 Sep 1805 they had a son Joshua Laycock, who was baptised on 23 Feb 1806 at All Saints, Newcastle. He is described as "1st S of John Laycock pit(le)(?) of Bradford York by his wife Mary Dr of William Burrell maltman of this chapelcy". (I have the image)

There is a death record for Mary Laycock of Newcastle for Jan to Mar 1840, but there is no age given to help us determine whether that is her. It is the only possible record I could find on GRO, but she may have died before then, when the GRO was not doing records. (I have that image, but don't think that is necessarily her.)

I am not aware of any other children that William Senior and Elizabeth might have had. Nor do I have anything else on William. But I have Elizabeth's burial at All Saints on 20 Feb 1831 (record not image).

Place Newcastle upon Tyne Church name All Saints Register type Bishop's Transcripts Register entry number 2160 Burial date 20 Feb 1831 Burial person forename Elizabeth Burial person surname BURRELL Person age 71 Burial person abode Ballast Hills

That would have meant a birth date of about 1760.

I am fairly confident about what I have. But I would particularly like to know:

Baptism, marriage, burial for William Burrell the father.
Baptism, marriage for his wife Elizabeth.
Marriage for William the son, and any details of his wife.
Any missing details about Mary Laycock (nee Burrell), particularly whether the 1840 burial is her.

And any images where I say I have the details but not the image.

I know that's a lot, but any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Geoff Turner
Brisbane, Australia

That age is only three years out, so probably her. It seems there are several St Andrews churches in Newcastle, including a St Andrews Kirk (Presbyterian). Is there any way of knowing which St Andrews her burial was in? If it was the Presbyterian one, that would increase the chances of it being her.

At Durham Records Online the 1840 burial is recorded as Anglican.

Thanks. The family started out at All Saints moved to St Johns, so Anglican is not unexpected. I'll get the GRO death record and see who the informant is.

Not our Mary, unfortunately. Wife of a weaver. Our Mary was married to a miner. But thanks anyway.

Not to worry. It’s as important to rule out wrong things as it is to rule in right things.
