Royal Hospital School Photo 1907 from magazine
« on: Saturday 03 January 26 15:20 GMT (UK) »
I came across the photo in a school magazine from 1907. My grandfather AG Pope is shown as a part of the school band. I wonder whether anyone can improve the quality of the image and maybe even try to colourise it.

I would be interested to know what software is available for colourising some older photos. I would be keen to give it a go on a load of other black and whites.

Thank you in advance.

Thank you Peter. That looks better!

What software did you use for this out of interest? I'm interested to know what tools work well and whether there are free ones that will do what is needed.

Thanks again.

Matt

Hi, Matt.

I use Photoshop Elements (a cut down version of Photoshop) as my main app with occasional AI help from Topaz Photo AI.

Sadly, I can no longer recommend either of them—at least for hobbyists—because they’ve moved to quasi- or full-subscription models. Until the 2025 version you bought PSE for life; now your purchase is only good for 4 years. Photo AI likewise has been moth-balled with all new purchases as subscriptions to the slightly changed name app, Topaz Photo.

I’ll keep using what I have until they no longer work.

Free ones? GIMP probably lies somewhere between PSE and the full-blown Photoshop in what it can do, especially with its plug-in functionality. Because I’ve learnt on and like PSE, I find GIMP difficult to master. But if you start fresh and persevere I don’t think you’ll go wrong with GIMP. It’s what I’ll go to when my PSE eventually becomes unusable.

If you look through old topics in the sub-board “Photograph Resources, Tips and Tutorials” you’ll find several discussions about software that restorers on here have used or recommended over the years.

Hi Peter,

Thanks for your detailed reply. I too find it frustrating that everything seems to be subscription based these days. I might try out GIMP - I appreciate your recommendation.

Thanks again.
