Parentage enquiry - Phyllis D Woodliffe (born 1900, Retford)
« on: Friday 02 January 26 11:34 GMT (UK) »
Dear Archives Team,

I’m researching my great x2 Grandmother, Phyllis D Woodliffe, who was born in 1900 in Retford, Nottinghamshire. I’m trying to identify her father, but I haven’t yet found a birth certificate or baptism record that confirms his name.

Here’s what I know so far:

- Name: Phyllis D Woodliffe
- Birth: 1900, Retford, Nottinghamshire
- Mother: Ada Ann Woodliffe (1875–1952)
- Death: Unknown, but she is listed as deceased (possibly Lincolnshire)

If you have access to birth records, parish registers, or any other documents that might list her father’s name, I’d be very grateful for any help or guidance.

Thank you for your time and assistance.

Kind regards,
Leo
 :)

Her birth is registered as Phillis Dixon Woodliffe, 1st q 1900, East Retford 7b 1.

There is no mother's maiden surname given, which suggests that her mother was unmarried.

You can buy the certificate as a digital download from the GRO for £3.00, this will at least confirm her mother's name.

No sign of a father figure in the 1901 Census
Is the middle name "Dixon" a clue perhaps to her father's surname?

According to a tree at ancestry, there is no fathers name on the birth certificate, left blank.

1901 Ada is in Clayworth with her widowed father William and her sibling Horace aged 11. Phyllis is there aged 1 year. From GRO it appears Ada's mothers maiden name was Hall.
1911 Ada still in Clayworth still with her pa and Phyllis aged 11
Death registry Ada A Woodliffe aged 77 Oct 1952 Gainsborough District 3b/157
Baptism from NFHS 10 Jan 1900 Phylis Dixon dau of Edith Woodliffe abode Clayworth. So it appears that Ada Ann is her aunt. EDITH her mother.
You need Phyllis's birth certificate. Woodliffe PHILLIS Dixon 1900 M Q East Retford 7B/1

Only other Dixons in Clayworth at this time.
1901 census Clayworth- there is a Betsy Dixon listed with two children with her mother and brother  Favill. Marriage East Retford Jun 1891 Betsy Favill and Arthur Dixon.
