Coast Guard Station
« on: Friday 02 January 26 03:19 GMT (UK) »
My query is in regard to an address that was given for an ancestor of mine in 1842. Samuel GIDLEY's contact address was given as 'Mr Samuel GIDLEY, Coast Guard Station, Balley Collon (?), County Tyrone, Ireland'.
I'd be very grateful if anyone could shed any light onto this as my searches have all drawn a blank.
Thank you

You can download the Coastguard records for Ireland from the National Archives (Kew), look for a series of very large adobe files with the title ADM175. ADM175/18 pages 75 and 76 shows Ballycotton station Co. Cork for 1830s and 40s and includes a boatman named 'Saml. Gidley' who transferred there from Youghal station

I located some further details of Samuel's Coastguard service :

ADM175/18 page 72, transferred from 'CGS 62 Tower', 11th May 1836 to Youghal
transferred out to Ballycotton 17th Sept.[?] 1838

ADM175/18 pages 75 and 76, transferred from Youghal CGS (Coast Guard Station)
  to Ballycotton CGS [date unclear]
transferred out to Mellisle CGS 6th March 1843

ADM175/18 page 379, transfer from Ballycotton CGS 6th March 1843
  to Mellisle CGS, transferred out
to Jack's Hole  [no date noted]

ADM175/22 page 22, transfer from Millisle to Jack's Hole CGS 8th November 1843
[end of service in this book]

ADM175/19 (1845-1862) page 33, Jack's Hole CGS
transferred to 5 Mile Point CGS 19th Feb 1851

ADM175/19 page 29, transfer from Jack's Hole CGS to 5 Mile Point CGS 19th Feb 1851
  discharged-pensioned 19th Oct 1852

Youghal and Ballycotton are in Co. Cork
'5 Mile Point' is in Co. Wicklow
Jack's Hole is in Co. Wexford
Mellisle station is in Co. Down, south of Donaghadee
I dont know what the 62 Tower reference relates to

An 1843 newspaper report mentioning Edw Charles Smith has "... 62 Tower station, near Hastings ...". I wonder if this refers to Martello Tower No. 62?
