Many, many thanks to everyone for all of this information. I greatly appreciate it. I am researching my GIDLEY family from Devon and, fortunately, was given a couple of letters written in the 1840s that gave me Samuel's address - obviously (now) this address wasn't accurate but good enough that you clever people were able to join the dots.
