Visiting NZ
« on: Yesterday at 02:07 »
Hi all,
I'm planning a trip with some friends to NZ's North Island.
I'm trying to combine sightseeing with researching some of my ancestors.

The name is JAMIESON.
Barr Jamieson came from Scotland aboard the Duchess of Argyle, arriving at Auckland on 9 October 1842.  With him was his wife, Ann (Pettigrew) and children; Jane, Ann, Govan and I'm not sure about any other children.

Wife Ann died in Auckland on 21 Feb 1850 due to an epileptic fit.  I believe but not confirmed that she is buried at Te Muri Cemetery.  I've also heard that I'd need permission to visit her grave as it's on private property.

Their daughter Jane is my line and she came to Australia.

The son, Govan James Jamieson and his wife Mary (nee Cooper) both died at Mahurangi Heads in 1899.
Govan is buried in the Mahurangi Heads Presb. Cemetery along with Mary.
Am wondering if there is any headstone that is clear enough to take a good photo of.
Also wondering where to get information on where the family actually lived and if there's still a house there that I can also take a photo of.
Some of their children died in Auckland and others at Mahurangi.

Over the years the family moved around and I know some are buried at Coromandel but I'm not going there unfortunately.

Also hoping some people here can give me some "local knowledge" about places too see on a budget.  Here's my basic itinery:

Staying at Ranui 2 nights
Half day visit to Whangarei to meet up with a chatter.
Then down to Mahurangi East - hopefully to see graves.

The following night will be at Ramarama.
Then across to Katikati for 2 nights.
Then we'll head down to Rotorua for 2 or 3 nights.
The next stop will be Hawke's Bay/Napier.  One of my travelling partners has some ancestry in Napier but as yet, I don't know the details.

The next stop will be Wellington.  However is there anything worth stopping for in between the two places...

After Wellington we will be staying at Oroua Downs.
Up to Brixton
Across to Tamahere and then fly home.

Somewhere I've missed a stop but not thinking straight at the moment.

I do believe that there are some JAMIESON descendants in the Hamilton area.

Would love to meet up with anyone related or not if at all possible.

Thanks in advance,

Jackie

Find a grave has instructions (walk at low tide) for access to Te Muri.
Not seeing Ann in their list though.

There is a photograph of Govan Jamieson’s gravestone on find a grave.

I THINK the nearest museum to Mahurangi is Warkworth. It’s small but last time I went it had helpful volunteers in their archives room.

Nice and quick with those links Mckha and yes, The Warkworth and District Museum has a fair bit on the local history and very helpful volunteers, not that I've been for some years myself but on the to do list again since we visit the town quite regularly now having moved from South Auckland to Orewa a couple of years ago.

I usually make a point of picking up a copy of Mahurangi Matters which comes out twice a month along with our Hibiscus Matters and often historical and local interest items to familiarise with my whole new area a bit more!

Have a great trip Jackie and all the best with research additions.

Where did Ann Jamieson die? I see the inquest was held in Queen Street  (https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/NZ18501225.2.5.1?end_date=31-01-1851&items_per_page=10&query=Jamieson&snippet=true&start_date=01-12-1850 presumably Auckland ?) seems an effort to get a body back to Mahurangi for burial. (Although of course the coastal shipping was good then - I reckon they should bring it back.)
