Jonwarrn,

I had believed Mary Ann Swinburn to be the previous owner of The Isle of Man but, from your information, I can she was his 22 year old niece and he had obviously put her in to manage the beerhouse whilst he run the Shield Row Hotel a couple of miles away.

All of the other details you supplied fit nicely with what has already been discussed here for instance, the fact that his son was the publican by 1891.  As for Henry Tiplady, he took over management (if not ownership) of the Shield Row Hotel some time after John Charlton's death.  I have no idea where he was in 1871 but there were four pubs in Annfield Plain at that time.

jonwarrn,

Henry Tiplady may have been the man from whom John Charlton bought The Isle of Man in 1871 or 1872.

If he was at Annfield Plain in 1871 it would have been at The Queen's Head Hotel, The Coach and Horses, the Railway Inn or the Stanhope and Tyne Railway Inn.  The two latter frequently get mixed up in press reports.

Do you happen to know which one he was in?  They are all in either Front Street or West Road.

Neville, sadly the 1871 census simply gives Henry Tiplady's location as Annfield Plain.
Possibly the newspapers of the time might yield some more information.

JenB,

That is well worth a try.  However, I am more than happy with the results I have received so far and the valued opinions of people like yourself.  Some nice little extras have turned up too - like your Boca Chica story and your picture of the airport runway, where you can see the outline of the building under the mud patches.

Henry Tiplady may have been the man from whom John Charlton bought The Isle of Man in 1871 or 1872.
Does this snippet from the Newcastle Daily Chronicle, 7 Aug 1869 point to John Charlton owning the Isle of Man before the above dates?
Stanly Bank can be seen on the '57/61 map.

John Charlton is at Shield Row in '71 with wife Barbara and a 21 yr old niece Margaret Swinburne.

Henry Tiplady had dogs.
In January 1869 he is described as of Stanley, or at least his dog was (Newcastle Journal, 20 January)
August 1870, Annfield Plain (Northern Echo, 25 August)

Refers to Henry Tiplady of Annfield Plain ‘leaving the neighbourhood’ in 1872.

Newcastle Courant 4 Sep 1868, Brewster Sessions, Lanchester
24 applied for a new licence - including "John Charlton, Shield Row". Possibly for the Isle of Man?

The Newcastle Daily Chronicle, 24 Aug 1867
"John Charlton, Shield Row" listed as applying for a new licence.
