I searched his 1791 "... tedious journal ..." (Vols I and II) earlier today for any possible clue - drew a blank.

My mother would be ashamed of me!  I totally forgot my manners and failed to thank JenB for organising this post to be transferred to the Durham forum.  So, thank you JenB, your efforts are greatly appreciated.

Yes, this certainly deserves to be filed in the landscape history of Co. Durham.

Thank you Elliven and AlanBoyd for your knowledge of the history of Cuba and research in parish records.  This is all relevant to the history of the places where people lived, and still live. It fills out the background of many people's family history.  I used the spelling Havanah because that is what the OS had used, but we all know how proper names can vary during the 19th cent.

Ponteland St Mary the Virgin 1793 (almost certainly a different Havannah)

For the record here is the Ponteland Havannah, now pretty much under the runway of Newcastle Airport https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/side-by-side/#zoom=15.8&lat=55.04492&lon=-1.66920&layers=6&right=ESRIWorld

Totally off this particular County Durham topic, but the best ever ‘borrowed’ place name simply has to be Boca Chica at Cambois, Blyth in Northumberland. https://maps.nls.uk/view/101027298#zoom=5.5&lat=2038&lon=5295&layers=BT

Thank you JenB.  That is the second house found recently only to disappear at the end of a runway, the first was in Liverpool.  Just looked up the map of Boca Chica, it has a district named Margate (not Blyth!)

I’m a bit lost I’m afraid, I thought Margate was in Kent?
Boca Chica in Northumberland is at Cambois near Blyth.

I was meaning the map of B C, Florida.  They didn't consider a northern resort.

The man's name was John Charlton (locally born) the pub was The Isle of Man and it was dated 1872.  He tried for a full licence for his beerhouse in 1872, again in 1873 and finally got it in 1877.  He bought the pub from a lady named Margaret Ann Swinburne of whom I know nothing

I may be completely wrong (sorry!), but...
If this is the right man :-\, John Charlton's wife was Barbara Swinburn
Married at Gateshead in 1858

In 1861 and 1871 they have niece Margaret Ann Swinburn with them (born Ovingham, 1850)
Is she related to the Margaret mentioned?

From 1868 poll book (bottom right), Tanfield
Henry Tiplady, Isle of Man

Previous image has several John Charltons.

Was this Henry Tiplady the Inn Keeper who was in nearby Annfield Plain in 1871? :-\
