JenB,

Thank you so much for passing that item on to hanes teulu.  I tried several times and had to delete it several times because it kept sending a totally different press cutting and repeatedly told me that it had sent the correct one.

The problem was obviously at my end but I just could not find a solution.

Thanks for the snippet. "John Charlton" would appear to link to "Charlton's .... forgotten as the Isle of Man" referred to in the snippet at reply #17 and "William Charlton Stanley hotel" in Kelly's 1890 Directory.

Like Fiddlerlass, I was also drawn to the Stanley family, "Lords of Man", as the possible source of the IOM link!!

hanes teleu,

Lanchester and Tanfield parishes border each other and this could refer to the area of Isle of Man but I can see no other connection unless he was the Isle of Man publican.  Individually the two parishes covered vast areas and both contained many inns and alehouses.  Was he the publican of the Isle of Man beerhouse?

JenB,

The result I found did not give what you might call his postal address.  What you have explained here suggests to me that he lived in one of the original cottages which was on the site of the original beerhouse.

Both the date and the location given indicate that that he lived in the cottage that used to be the inn and was one of the original buildings of the lost hamlet of Isle of Man - or, perhaps more likely, the adjoining farmhouse.

The fact that the Stanley Hotel is named and he is described as an Innkeeper suggests that he was the successor to John Charlton.  Thank you.

In  the 1871 census Isle of Man is entered as ‘Havannah (Isle of Man)’.
There appear to have been only one household, the head of which was Thomas Cawthorn, a blacksmith.

Note the description at reply #17 of the " ... one or two cottages" when entering Stanley from the west and what has happened to them.
