Mary A. Devenport
« on: Yesterday at 12:41 »
Mary A. Devenport   ,  General Servant of 51 Queen Street. Wigan in 1871 Census (has 2 year old son or younger sibling Robert with her)

Head of the household is Mary Ann Alker born 1835 , Shopkeeper at 51 Queen Street  Wigan.

Mary Ann Alker lists Mary A. Devenport as a Cousin .

(Mary Ann Alker's parents are James Alker of Haigh , Lancs.and Charlotte Corless of Dalton, Lancs.) This is an error should be Ann Simkin as wife, see later posts.

Can you help me find a Devenport marriage amongst the siblings of either James Alker or Charlotte Corless ? Thank you.

You could check these records:
From a published tree and Lancs opc
Mary Ann Devenport baptised 1850 - parents James and Ann

Marriage - 1843 - Hindley
James Davenport and Ann Simkin

Baptism - 1823 Ann Simkin with parents David and Mary

Baptism - 1812 Ellen - parents David and Mary - Burtonwood

Marriage - 1834
Ellen Simkin and John Alker, Upholland

Baptism - 1835
Mary Ann Alker - parents John and Ellen, Wigan

Ellen Alker is then widowed and marries James Linney in 1839 - you can check the censuses.

This isn't the information you have about Mary Ann Alker so you will need to check it out as you have different parents.

I thought I had shown that possibility with the two sisters, Ellen and Ann Simkin who would be the mothers to the two Mary Anns.
However, you have Charlotte Corless as Mary Ann Alker’s mother.

Wivenhoe posted the baptism of Robert with Mary Ann as his mother.
If you look through the censuses, Mary Ann Alker uses the surname Linney in 1851.
In 1881, Robert is listed as cousin to Mary Ann Alker and her stepfather,James Linney is living with her too.
The residence through all censuses is Queen Street.
This confirms the cousin relationship, I think.
