Charles george Pensons Death cert May 17,1910 Dunedin age 61where born Oxfordshire England years in NZ 45. Where married Dunedin Otago aged 27 years. To whom married. Elizabeth GRAHAM 53 years.This makes him being in nz abt 1865 As was said could have been at the goldfields his first son being born 1876 Thanks Lnr

First thoughts of Charles George Penson heading for NZ about 1864/65 was possibly straitened family circumstances following death of Rev Penson. The Canfield living was worth about £90 a year and by 9 July 1864 a successor had been elected.

However, the '61 Census shows them living at Canfield and the household includes an 82 year old Elizabeth Penson, boarder, Fundholder. The 1892 will of Rev John's wife Catherine reveals her leaving "effects £14,622 3s 8d resworn Jul 1892, £8,883 6s 11d" - probate to dau. Maria and son Richard.

So, Charles travelling to NZ at around 17/18 years of age not necessarily driven by need?
