John Mulholland Whitehaven
« on: Monday 29 December 25 20:14 GMT (UK) »
Hi this is my first post, Im hoping someone can help. My gt grandad was John Mulholland b 1874 in Newtonards to Elizabeth Mathers. I am looking to find information about him. He lived in Whitehaven and was a coal miner. He married Catherine McCashen. However, I am unsure to his surname, I have been unable to find any record of his birth either in Ireland or Whitehaven my mum always told me that he was a bast*rd and mullholland was his stepfathers surname. Does anyone have any hints or tricks to help me find him. Please

Hi, welcome to Rootschat!  :)

Just a few random thoughts for now.

You mention MATHERS... when William MULHOLLAND married John's mother in 1879, she was named as Eliza MADDERS.

In the 1891 census, John is aged 17 and his brother James is 11 -
but in 1881 John was 7 and James was 10 - I suspect he was actually 10 months.

Looking for a birth for him, we find James MULLHOLAND (note the spelling!), and the GRO index gives his mother's maiden name as MADDERS.

Looking for other children, there was a William MULHOLLAND born in 1884 (mother nee MCMANUS) who apparently died in 1885.  Was this another spelling variation?

Then there's Ellen MULHOLLAND born in 1886 (also mother MCMANUS) - I don't see her at all. :(

As I said, random thoughts.  Perhaps another birth name to search for in Ireland.
Today I broke my personal record for most consecutive days alive.

Hi Geoff thank you, I never realised that the census return was in months for James, stupid mistake. I have seen Madders and have also seen Mathers, i have used both because if she had a very strong accent it could have been misheard. I will look at the other surnames thank you. I feel John could have been born illegitately yet i do have mulholland dna matches on ancestry.  :)

Records show that Eliza MATHERS / MADDERS was born abt 1845 in Ballygalget, Portaferry, Downpatrick.

If you acquire her marriage certificate you should get her father’s name and occupation. That will help you with your search.
