Another source to try is https://birminghamhistory.co.uk/forum/ - they have a section specifically on Middlemore Home children.  Members have related stories regarding their ancestors and also links/tips as to how they found further information.

Its worth having a look.

Taken from #28

PEARCE, NELLIE       mmn JACKSON
GRO Reference: 1891  M Quarter in BIRMINGHAM  Volume 06D  Page 217

Baptised in Catholic Church --Birmingham, Dudley Road, St Patrick, Warwickshire, England

as Helena Pearce, mmn Jackson

Is it possible Hubert has a Catholic name for a baptism--clutching at straws.

Thank you so much for all your effort. I will look into the Birmingham link.

As some have mentioned, it is so sad he was placed in a children's home.

Anything is possible with respect his religion, he may well have been catholic!

I just found it strange that Hubert was living with Thomas Southall in 1891 and listed as his grandson, also noticing the housekeeper was Rebecca Jackson. I was curious as to whether Rebecca had a child hat had a relationship with a child of Thomas, hence being listed as a grandson on the census. I did see other children of Thomas and his wife Harriet on earlier census'. Incidentally, Hubert's first daughter was named Clara.

I will keep searching!

Thanks again
