I recently took up the My Heritage DNA offer with genome sequencing for £29.

I thought that it sounded too good to be true…

Anyway, I’ve sent it off, but had this email from My Heritage today:

You recently activated your MyHeritage DNA kit. If you have not yet sent the DNA sample to the lab, please follow the instructions for collecting and mailing the sample.

With your MyHeritage DNA kit you’ll receive an Ethnicity Estimate and DNA Matches, and by upgrading, your results will also include more than 41 detailed reports that can empower your future health and lifestyle choices.

If you upgrade before your DNA sample arrives at the lab, your health reports will be ready at the same time as your Ethnicity Estimate and DNA Matches. If you decide to upgrade later, you may need to take a new DNA test.

Upgrade now for just £50 and you’ll get:

Image
Genetic Risk Reports that indicate your risk for developing conditions like heart disease, breast cancer, Parkinson’s disease, and type 2 diabetes (some reports are only available to people who are of mainly European ancestry)

Image
Carrier Status Reports that tell you if you’re a carrier for conditions that can be passed on to your children, such as Tay-Sachs and cystic fibrosis

Upgrade now and your health reports will be ready at the same time as your Ethnicity Estimate and DNA Matches.

What happened to the genome sequencing? I don’t want more health reports, I did that with 23andme! I expect there’ll be a further message soon saying that if you want the genome sequencing, it’ll be £££££££ more!!!

It's only my guess but I think you're worrying unnecessarily. This sounds just like routine upselling, as they call it.

I’m already on My Heritage, having uploaded there from Ancestry, and so have no interest in duplicating that. I sent off for this offer purely because of the genome sequencing, and that seems to have fallen off the radar now!

I would not use a MH DNA test until such a time as they have proven they can handle it correctly.

We do not assume anything when we are adding people to our tree, there has to be all the records checked, double checked, triple checked etc.

So why assume full DNA genome sequencing will be provided?

I asked the question on their Facebook page, I am still awaiting a response a few weeks later.

It is just a Blog.

It is also less than a month after the stated completion of the move so I would not presume that there has been a mad rush to buy the kits and to have the sample analysed.

My Heritage does not really have a strong reputation for accuracy on their Ethnicity so this aspect to me would still be very questionable as it will take time for the Whole Genome Database to be populated to a level where more accurate results are given.

Personally I will give it a go myself buy will wait a few months to see what happens.

Now ftDNA uses the same Lab as My Heritage to process their samples and the Traits that they gave me are probably about 80% inaccurate, so do be cautious if you go that route as well.

Good luck with the results and please do update us on the outcome.
