Davis
« on: Saturday 27 December 25 09:31 GMT (UK) »
Hi I am looking for information on a John Davis who was born in 1775 Dover, Kent, England. He had a wife called Mary Darby, they married on the 16th April 1810 in Dover as well. They had about 9 children (That I know of, this information could be false. I do have there names and some of there birth years as well). But any information on him or his parents or children could be very helpful :).

1841 Census - Saint Mary The Virgin, Dover - Inayate Street
Mary Davis - age 50 - Schoolmistress? - Born in Dover
Jane Davis - age 20 - FS (female servant) - Born in Dover
Richard Davis - age 20 - MS (male sevant) - Born in Dover
Caroline Davis - age 14 - no occupation - Born Dover

Attached is the 1841 Census snippet - I think the occupation for Mary Davis is Schoolmistress?.. but needs to be confirmed

Note: Mary's age from the 1841 Census suggests her year of birth as circa 1791

Also, the occupations on the Census for Jane and Richard Davis both aged 20 is interesting. I thought servants were placed at the bottom after the family. Also, if they were servants, why would they have Davis as their surname?     Am I missing something?

1835 marriage in Dover - John Davis to Elizabeth Boot - Witnesses: Edward Davis & Mary Ann Davis

? - 1836 marriage in Dover - Mary Ann Davies to John Morris - Witness - Elizabeth Davis (maybe the wife of John Davies?)

1853 marriage in Dover - Louisa Sarah Davis to Sacar John Hoult - Father & Occ: John Davis Bootcloser

Hi I am looking for information on a John Davis who was born in 1775 Dover, Kent,

How was John Davis's DOB assessed as 1775?

Yes 1841 census has Mary Davis as a schoolmistress

In 1851 Mary Davis is a governess.

Note: Mary's age from the 1841 Census, suggests her year of birth as circa 1791.

Note that ages on the 1841 census were rounded down.
Mary’s birth was closer to 1788, according to her age at death (73) in Feb 1861. St. Mary Parish, Dover.  Note – she left a will.

They are her children, probably day servants living at home rather than living in with an employer.

Son Frederick (1823) married Sarah Eldridge 1851 reg. Wandsworth

The executor of his mother's will he is described as a Landscape Artist of Colchester Essex.
His marriage also gives that occupation however he says his father is James not John a shoemaker
The Clerk could have misunderstood of course.
From census records he is always a Landscape Artist and he did have children born in Lexden near Colchester in Essex.

1861 he is 38 and visiting the Hoult family in Kent that his sister Louisa Sarah married into. 1871 he is in St Pancras with his family transcribed as Fredrich Davis.

Pieced together the children of John Davis and Mary nee Darby and some of the families of the children on FamilySearch.

https://www.familysearch.org/en/tree/person/details/MSDF-C33

Some additional records/branches on the children popped up from other contributors, such as the children of Louisa Sarah nee Davis and her 1902 death in Maidstone
