variant given name/s
« on: Thursday 25 December 25 20:06 GMT (UK) »
Would some kind administrator or Roots Collague please advise me with the following,

I am researching the family of James O Donnell Drumdeevin DED Termon Donegal Ireland with particular attention to his Son, namely Francis (Frank) born 26/01/1886.

On his birth record for the stated date at the Registration District of Millford, the name of his Mother is listed as "Giley." (Maiden name Coyle)On the record for subsequent children born to this family, the name of the Mother is stated as "Julia." Coyle.  Question: Would Julia be an alternative name for Giley?

As stated above, my concentration is on Francis, and he resided in Pennsylvania, where I have found him on numerous census records with the name "Frank, "but I have difficulty finding his emigration record.

Sorry for any confusion, but two queries in this post, No. 1, is Julia an alternative for Giley? and seeking information on emigration record for Francis (Frank) O Donnell  (Father James, Mother Giley or possible alternative Julia Coyle)  Regards and thanks for your interest

I do believe that I am concentrating on same family.  Regards

Here's the birth record for Francis in 1886-

Mother recorded as GILES not Giley. I've seen it as a variant of Julia before. See this topic (also in Donegal)-

Here's the family in 1901 (mother Julia)-
https://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Donegal/Termon/Drumdeevin/1192709/
Same family in 1911 (mother Julia) with only a few children still at home- 11 children/10 living-

Several of the census records should list a date of emigration to U.S. which can be used as a guide but bear in mind he might have gone to Canada first before entering the U.S.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Not so sure, the old thread suggests census indicates both used. See the next birth entry on the page + the y of February; parents marriage for entry 252 https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/view/?record_id=cima-2907892.
The female forname Giley seems to be concentrated in Milford District & restricted to Co. Donegal if do an exact forname search of civil marriages or civil births.
