Ashton or Quarmby
« on: Tuesday 23 December 25 20:23 GMT (UK) »
I have found a marriage certificate for my gguncle in Sheffield.  In the bottom left corner of the certificate it says, in part, "Col. 2 for "Ashton" and in Col. 7 for "Ashton" read "Quarmby".  Corrected on the 18th day of April 1931 by me, G.C. Weaver, Vicar.
Where exactly does "Quarmby" enter the picture and for what meaning?  Nowhere else, in all the subsequent recordings, does the name "Quarmby" appear.
Any help will be appreciated.

For anybody who doesn't have a marriage cert to hand!!

Column 2 is "Name & surname"

Column 7 is "fathers name & surname"

Although it was "corrected in 1931" - when did the marriage actually take place & what were the names of the bride & groom?

Whose name was corrected in column 2 - bride or groom?

What were the names of their respective fathers & which fathers name was corrected in col 7 - bride's or grooms?

Not enough information provided in your opening post to be able to make an informed comment.

However, there is a family in the Yorkshire area with the surname Ashton-Quamby or Ashton Quanbury.
In the census records they sometimes are recorded with the just the name Ashton, and sometimes as Quanbury.
The names perhaps goes back to the marriage of Elizabeth Ashton and William Quanbury in 1842.

]Thanks for your response.  The marriage was in 1901 and names recorded on the marriage certificate were Albert Cook and Betsy Jane Ashton.  Witnesses were William Edward Ashton and Maggie Boag.   It appears that nothing on the document  has been changed, except for the addition of the notation in the bottom left corner,  Her father's name is Ashton.  I cannot see where Quarmby comes into it.  I tried to attach a copy of the certificate but it would not go through.  So, this is the complete notation  - In entry 404 col 2 for 'Ashton' read 'Quarmby otherwise Ashton and in Col 7 for 'Ashton' read 'Quarmby'.  Corrected on the eighteenth day of April 1931by me G.C. Weaver, Vicar, in the presence of Albert Cook and Betsy Jane Cook, the parties married.

If her father's name is Ashton Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks for this additional information but I'm not sure what I'm looking at.   Sorry, but could you please explain what "mmn UTTRIDGE" means?

Thanks for that.
So, do I have this correct now?  Betsy Jane's mother, nee Uttridge, must have been married to Quarmby, and perhaps later on, to William Ashton.  Betsy Jane took the name of Ashton, and when she married Albert Cook, it was registered as Betsy Jane Ashton.  Subsequently, 30 years later, the Vicar made the notation on the certificate, entering the name of Quarmby.  The name, Ashton, on the document was not actually changed  -  it was a notation written in the corner of the document.

I feel I'm spinning my wheels on this, and I still don't know why my previous posting has been labelled as SPAM.
