Any ideas for parenthood
« on: Monday 22 December 25 01:02 GMT (UK) »
Hello, I'm quite new here and have never posted a request before, but I'm hoping someone may be able to help. I have researched 1 line of my past back to 1818 (or thereabouts). I'm stuck with my 4GGF, John Ramshaw. I think he was born in 1818, in Dipton Lanchester, Durham,  however, I have no solid evidence. I have records of him living in Broomshields, County Durham, and he marries a Jane Towns in Satley, Co Durham 29/10/1842 - I can evidence lineage from here.  The certificate from this marriage clearly states Jane's father, but John's is blank. Any ideas much appreciated

Welcome to RC.

There are basically two methods of determining Parenthood.

1) check with the Court records to see if any claim has been made by the Mother for support.

2) via a DNA test.

DNA can provide results but it can be a waiting game and there is a lot of work and a lot of learning required.

Thank you so much for your advice - I will certainly try the courts route. I already have my DNA record on ancestry with thousands of potential distant cousins so I would suppose it's about whittling down to certain DNA strands. I think I'll keep it real for now - may become an expert later in life - I've really got the bug for this  :) So interesting...... I think I'll be going for years  ;D

Many here have been going for a very long time.

Your “Keep it real” comment is concerning, please do not get to reliant on only using document records, DNA is the key to ensuring your Family Tree is a true Biological Family Tree.

I have been researching for 20 years and my Family Tree grew to over 9000 family members, the thing is half the tree is not my Biological family.  DNA has proved my Dad was not my Biological Father and last year I met my Biological Half Sister for the first time in 74 years.

Please read this thread:-

If you follow the advice given you will end up with a tree where to at least your 4xGGP’s they will be Biological family.

In many cases we come up against a parent who is not the biological parent and this can result in a certificate or record that is false, then all the tree beyond is also false.

My own birth certificate is false as is the birth certificate of my Great Grandfather and it is only thanks to my DNA test that my Family Tree is now Biological.

Thank you so much for sharing your journey.
I certainly didn't set out to offend anyone by "keeping it real" - the comment was purely aimed at my inexperience and non- ability to commit time and money to this fascinating subject just yet. I am sorry that my comment concerned you and thank you for pointing out the downfalls in my amateur research. This activity has been my absolute goto while grieving my parents. I will be more careful with the language I use in future  Happy New Year to you Sir
