Croft / Iveson of Manchester question.
« on: Friday 19 December 25 13:05 GMT (UK) »
I have census records for an Albert Edward Croft (B. 1880) and his wife Ada Elizabeth Croft (b. 1881) along with son Bernard Croft (B. 1905). They are found in 1901, 1911 and in 1939 with Ada a widow and Bernard living a few doors away on Fleeson st Manchester. This all looks quite straightforward until I look for a birth for Bernard around 1905: I find a birth with mother Iveson. When I look for a marriage for an Ada Elizabeth Iveson I can only find one to a Bernard Croft, nothing for Albert Croft. Everyone seems to live in the same area of South Manchester, I can find a divorce for Bernard Croft (B.1905 of Fleeson St) in a newspaper article of 1952. There seem to be two marriages one to a Marg Rhodes, another to Doris Burton( possibly bigamous?), finally the divorce in 1951.
Can anyone find a convincing marriage for the Albert – Ada- Bernard Croft family please.
Thanks
Dave

The 1952 newspaper article about the divorce of a Bernard Allen Croft states that he was 44 years old - Apparently he put his mother before his wife  :)

ADDED According to the paper they were married in 1945

Albert E(dward) uses those names on all of the census when he is with Amy so it is only the marriage where we assume he could be using the name Bernard.

I think that you may have to purchase that marriage certificate

On Family Search, there is a burial record for Albert Edward Croft. Died 15th March 1939, which would tie in with the 1939 record which puts Ada down as a Widow. Buried Southern Cemetery Chorlton-cum-Hardy. Plot 4660. Memorial ID. 146791046.
Regards.

Lancs BMD Shows the marriage was at St John’s Longsight.
It doesn’t look as though they are online.

I've attached a copy of the newspaper article of 1952. I don't think the judge liked Bernard very much: 'selfish morose and difficult'. Does anyone think it likely that Albert Edward Croft called himself Bernard just for the marriage to Ada? Perhaps he had a past that he was trying to escape? Debts or another marriage, or time in Strangeways prison?
The reason I'm looking for such a person like Bernard (B.1905) is that my wife's DNA test implies a connection at the third cousin level to south Manchester. My wife's grandmother who was born in 1905 in Chorlton might well have known a young man of the same age. The DNA test links to this extended family (Tanner / Croft / Buxton).

For anyone coming along in future years: I have the marriage certificate of Albert Edward Croft ( alias Bernard Allen Croft DOB around 1879). The father is listed correctly as Francis Croft a deceased house steward (he was a domestic butler in 1881 and died 1895). The witness Caroline Croft was Alberts sister (born as Sarah Louisa Caroline Croft). I also have a later electoral register of 1931: 16 Fleeson St Rusholme: living together are Ada Croft, Albert Edward Croft, son Bernard Alan Croft and his wife Margaret Croft.
