Help to decipher 1672 Marriage surname
« on: Thursday 18 December 25 13:40 GMT (UK) »
Can you help decipher the surname of Anthony?
The entry is in the All Saints' Church, Batley, marriages for 1672.
There are no BTs for this period.

Regards

Janet

I think it's Courteous, but a bit more of the page would be helpful.

Thanks for posting more. I still think it's Courteous, and the FreeREG transcriber for Dewsbury thinks the same.

Hi Bookbox,
I have carried out a blanket search for Anthony Courteous, Antony Courteous, Anthony Cou* and Antony Cou* on Family Search, 1610 to 1660, with no hits on these variants.  The surnames which appear are Coulinge, Coulson and Couper.

Have a look at the FreeREG transcripts for Dewsbury. There are quite a few there. It may be a localised variant spelling of Curtois, Curtoys, Curtis, Curtice etc.

ADDED
Huddersfield & District FHS have transcribed 2 possible baptisms to a father Antony Courteous, both at All Saints, Dewsbury:

Maria, 11 Oct 1673 (the register is in Latin, so probably Mary)
Sara, 9 Dec 1680

(Huddersfield & District FHS transcripts are available on FindMyPast.)
