Whilst I have cut back this year on using Postman Pat for Christmas Greetings it is still nice to receive cards via this method from friends and relations.
We used always to look forward to hearing the thud of cards on the mat. Our first job was to look at the handwriting and the Sorting Office code to see if we could guess who they were from.
But these days much of that fun has gone out of the window. Sorting Office codes are on a wide regional basis, are often smudged or indecipherable and a lot of folk use pre-printed self adhesive address labels.
Out of eight cards received this morning I was only able to identify two of the senders (correctly!).
Is there anyone else out there with such odd practices??????  rj

I used to do the same Jeff, but as you say it has become almost impossible.

I have also cut back on cards, having told many friends I would, but still have received more than I sent. I do stick a return address label on some because the recipients are elderly and I  hope if they have passed away then someone will let me know.  It didn’t quite work out with a relative in a care home, I got the card back but they simply wrote “Gone away” on the unopened envelope,

Almost always a mystery one .
Despite having things to do ,I am partly watching the film Anastasia ,with Ingrid  Bergman.
I feel very strongly thr “imposter “ Anna Andersen was the Grand Duchess, though how’s she  got awayI can’t imagine .
The’”imposter “  had two identifiable things,a deformed foot in the shape of a very pronounced bunion ,even at her young age , also her finger had been trapped in a carriage door just as a grand parade was to begin , it always was stiff after .
She recounted a meeting between her father The Tsar, and Prince Maurice of Battenberg , her mother’s relative, during WW1 .
Germany and  and Russia were at war of course so it was thought impossible such a meeting would take place .
Later ,released state papers proved there had indeed such a meeting .
However she survived and got away from Ekaterinburg is impossible to imagine.
She developed Tuberculosis of the sternum ,it was an illness in the family.
There are photographs of the summer residence at Tsarsko Selo ,with the children’s’ toys and nursery as it was  left ,very poignant .
The family generally did not like the Tsarina ,and wanted the Tsar’s brother to acceed to the throne ,as being stronger and more capable .
Ah well, a sad story ,but I can’t remember what tests were done on the remains found in the forest ,whatever , they’d were interred as if they were the Royal Family .
We can never really know .
Autocrats they were undoubtably ,but did not deserve such an end .
I read so much about them ,years ago , it fascinated me .
Our Royal family played  it cool,The Dowager Empress was Queen Alexandra’s sister ,Revolution was feared here,so scant support from our Royal Family .

I have a photograph album ,given to me by a neighbour - of a holiday spent on the Russian Royal yacht “ Standart” ,published by Queen Alexandra to raise funds for her charity .Cheerio.

I always felt that it was mean of George V not to support his cousin, the Tsar, by offering him and his family sanctuary during the Russian Revolution.  I suppose in those times of revolution royal families were wondering if it would be their turn next.

I was never sure about Anastasia and the film only confused me more.  I could not see how she could have escaped her family's awful assassination.

Nor do I but the finger injury and foot deformity plus the memory which was validated do seem to give the woman some gravitas .
The remains that were found are buried in - I suppose St.Basil’s Cathedral .
I don’t think they deserved that end ,they were so far removed from everyday reality they had no real idea of ordinary people’s lives.
The Tsarina was a depressive character ,and anxious —- no male heir and fell prey to Rasputin, a mountebank if ever there was one!
Ah!Well ,as Gillig said ,there were rumours of Revolution here ,so our Royals had to be very careful.
I can’t imagine a country with no Monarchy -
Cheerio folks .Look after yourselves .

Doing a bit more sifting and clearing of old paperwork this morning I came across our diary for the 2019 visit to the family down under. This entry suggests that even on main roads the traffic is not so heavy as to make way for local wildlife.
Out from Bega to Candelo and then on via Wyndham and Cathcart, where there was an old church building in the middle of nowhere, and on to Bombala, a former timber centre town with a rail link, long gone, up to Canberra. And so across the Monaro tablelands, lots of open space and thousands of sheep, but very little in the way of human existence. As we got back on the main highway, the Snowy Mountain Highway near to Nimitabell, there was a hold up in the traffic- to allow a dear little Echidna cross the road. And so back down the Brown Mountain via Bemboka (ant the pie shop!) to home base back at Bega.

Dilemma. All my Christmas decoration stuff is up in the attic. The last time Mark was here I forgot to ask him to get it down for me as I am banned from climbing the ladder to get into the loft!. I only really needed the card holders as there is very little room on any of the book shelves to put cards.
So, what to do with all my lovely cards? Well here is my answer. Simples!
