Helen's Corner Shop, Portmarnock, Dublin
« on: Sunday 14 December 25 17:25 GMT (UK) »
Hi Rootschatters

Researching the Kearney branch of my family tree, who lived in Dublin, I have come across the obituary of a second cousin by the name of Kevin Williams who died in 1992 (living in Portmarnock), which references wishes sent to his family by the "customers of Helen's Corner Shop" (I'm thinking this is also in Portmarnock).

I'm just wondering if they were Kevin Williams' customers and if he was the proprietor of the said corner shop.

Is anyone familiar with Helen's Corner Shop, or Kevin Williams.  I've tried to find information on the business, but to no avail.

Any input would be most welcome.

Regards

There's an obit in the Irish Independent, 9 Oct 1992 - is this the obit you have spotted? This one doesn't mention customers.

The acknowledgment 2 Dec 1992 mentions the customers.

It reads like it was his shop, or he worked there, maybe his mother had it before him, was she called Helen?

Edit. I see now his death notice says “Helen’s Corner Shop” Pearse Street and late of Wheatfield Road.
So they must have lived over the shop.

Hi Sinann and hanes teulu

Thank you both very much for your replies.  Yes, the obit I have is indeed the one from the Irish Independent in Oct 1992, but I don't have the death notice you referred to, Sinnan - would you kindly be able to direct me to where I might find that one?

Much obliged

Googling brought up 112 Pearse Street and referred to "grocery"

Reply 1 identifies the date of publication that mentions Pearse Street

That's very interesting hanes tuelu.  Thank you.  I've looked the location up on Google StreetView but I don't think the shop exists now.  Seems to have been at the junction of Pearse Street and Macken Street in Dublin, but I'm wondering if it might now be what is a Chinese/Thai restaurant called Starry Night .... ?
